Summary0002221: Crash
DescriptionThis is the same game as 2220 and its associated issues. It didn't look like the usual gc heap crashes that game has been generating, so I'm listing it separately. Unlike those crashes, it did generate an output log, which I'm attaching. This roughly coincided with a large wave hitting.

Oddly, after the crash report the game allowed me to continue playing, and even saving. Attached is a save from shortly before ("mitigated success"), and immediately after, the crash.

That is a bit different, but it's not something we can directly fix. Either it's a symptom of the general out of memory issues, or it's literally your system being out of memory in this specific case. This part is concerning:

81% memory in use.
3064 MB physical memory [557 MB free].
0 MB paging file [3532 MB free].
2048 MB user address space [274 MB free].
Write to location 01001000 caused an access violation.


That's really a very low amount of memory free, and you don't have a paging file. Granted, that should be enough memory left for considerable expansion, but you'll find that windows can be... funny. Sometimes it wants to allocate in a big chunk and can't, and then dies.

Paging files are sort of a pressure-relief valve for that sort of circumstance, and they can actually prevent instability in windows at high memory usage (at the expense of slowness of accessing the disk, granted). It's all kind of voodoo magic when it comes to managing the page file, but I was a system admin for a goodly number of years and I had a chance to experiment with the voodoo on a lot of workstations and servers.

This was back in the windows 2000/XP days, but what I found at the time was that it seemed best to create a statically-sized page file that was anywhere from 15% to 50% of the size of the RAM. The dynamically-sizing page file is really performance-heavy, but having no pagefile is risking crashes. On my own machine at present, I'm running windows 7 with the same amount of memory as you, and a 1.5gb pagefile, and it handles the memory overflows well when I'm running near memory redline like you are (which is 99% of the time for me -- I'm upgrading as soon as sandy bridge is out).

Anyway, I haven't really tested my pagefile theories since the 2000/XP days, so far all I know something has changed, but I figure it's worth mentioning. The central crash possibly related to this has it's own thread, so I'm mostly going to close this one as a duplicate... slash possible machine config error, hence the resolution status.

How odd. I just checked, and indeed I hadn't manually set a page file size on this system (as I habitually do), the system was supposed to be auto managing it. Don't you love Windows? Anyway, I corrected that, as I've had all sorts of problems with their "automatic page file management" in the past. Thanks!

Sure thing! That is really odd -- maybe an upgrade issue or something? Or some wonky factory presets, maybe. Or... just windows being windows. ;)
