Summary | 0007379: General spell recoil
Description | From a previous forum discussion on "Ocean Spaces" Just general recoil based on the "mass" of the spell being flung would some nice weight to the combat. We already deal with a bit of movement when casting in a wind storm, so things like being knocked off platforms are not new. It would also add tactical decisions on spell use. A well timed launch rock at the apex of a jump could just be the thing needed to make a life saving jump. The general case would allow for the most emergent behavior. As for specific issues with it, well, you'll just have to implement it and let us play around Very similar to Bluddy's 0006989, but that one was specific to underwater combat.

Keith and I discussed this and decided against it for the general case: it would violate a lot of expectations of most players. However, we are planning two things: 1. An enchant which enables this sort of thing so that players who want that sort of style of play can get it. 2. More spells like storm fist that include some recoil as part of whatever else they are busy doing. |

I got a bunch of questions now :) Could I ask you to clarify the "expectations" you are referring to? Would this enchant, one that arguably makes the game harder, be taking the place of one that makes the player stronger? And if so, could the enchant be inverted and remove knock back, like the windstorm resistance.? |
|
"Expectations" of a player that generally in a platformer game when they stand on a small platform and use an ability, they are not pushed off the platform to their death. For the other enchant, I'm not sure what slot it would go on. Maybe the finesse slot? I forget if that is left or right arm. The idea would be to combine this general effect with other more desirable things that balance them out. Interestingly, stone legs probably should be expanded to include knockback resistance in general anyhow. |

I think the knock back from casting spells normally makes more sense than the wind-caused movement while casting spells. That one always threw me for a bit of a loop. I get that you have to stand up to cast a spell, and the character is no longer crouching against the wind, but still. Maybe that's just a separate issue. |
