Summary0006989: Improving battles in water
DescriptionRight now it feels like fighting in water lacks something. You sink to the bottom and the only way out is with crates/platforms, which feels slightly hackish (a good hack, but a hack nonetheless).

At first I thought it was necessary to add swimming to make fights in water fun. But then I realized that isn't the case. What we need instead is to propel ourselves with recoil.

Spells like Throw Rock (sorry, blanking out on the name) should have a lot of recoil in water if you're not on ground. But water spells should REALLY have a lot of recoil, and they would be the best way to get around. In fact, any spell that has you throwing mass should do some recoil. Fire spells would do only a little (burning matter), and electrical/magical spells would have no recoil. I also suggest a 'water jet' spell that blasts water in close proximity, which would be an ideal choice for maneuvering around water.

A further suggestion is to change the effect of spells when they're used in water. Electric spells would cause a lot more damage but would also zap you somewhat. Fire spells would be weaker but have minimal recoil. Water spells would be strong but have a lot of recoil (since they're also the main way to move around). Throw Rock's rock would move much more slowly, doing much less damage. In fact, all flinging spells should be much slower underwater.

I think this is the kind of change that'll make underwater fights the way they should be: awesome. And it'll open up a completely new dimension when you get to those bits of the game.

This sounds wonderful. Not sure if it's practical but it would be quite a unique mechanic and could be very fun. Probably post 1.0, tho, it sounds like a pretty big can of bug and balance worms. (Balance worms are like inchworms, by the way, except with one-hit kills)

I realize this will almost certainly be a post 1.0 thing.

Forgive me for essentially tooting my own horn here. I often find that quite a few of the ideas I put on mantis are not as good as I originally thought, but this is one I particularly like. However, I submitted this when the devs were busy with far more important stuff, and there's a chance they missed it.

x4000, keith -- any comments on this?

Perhaps a water suit which allows one to swim? Maneuverability is really needed in water, especially when you have a few sea worms or whales on the map.

Infinite jumping in water would just be easier.

I've found the minor teleport spell to be extremely useful for getting around underwater (I've yet to unlock major teleport, so I don't know if that would be even better).

I think the mechanics of underwater mobility are definitely something to be considered. I don't think the way it currently works is bad, it's just one option. Adding recoil is another option, as is adding infinite jump. Yet another option is adding a 'water suit' that lets you swim in place, without rising or sinking - the downside to this idea is that a 'swimming in place' animation would probably have to be added to the game.

I think both recoil (0006989) and jump power (0009005) should be increased in water. Along with more underwater enemies this will make fighting in water, and general mobility, a lot of fun without needing to design something as complicated as swimming for an area with the least amount of content so far.
