Summary | 0026645: Chromatic horror causes horrific micromanagement when fixing turret placement
Description | Since it can relocate buildings, it causes issues with the player's setup of turrets. As building and positioning of turrets and other buildings is a pretty significant source of repetitive micro, the chromatic horror makes this far worse by throwing them all over the place. They then need to be manually destroyed and placed again - there is no automated reconstruction like would occur with remains. Sure, I can just disable the faction if I don't want to deal with this, but it that feels rather sad of a solution. If this horrid micro in rebuilding planets is WAD, can we have an option to disable chromatic horror's ability to target buildings?

I mean, that's exactly what the chromatic horror does? It rearranges buildings. |
Agree with Badger. That's the main purpose of the faction. I don't think I see what purpose it would serve if it didn't target buildings. |
My suggestion was to provide the players Repelling Wards to force the Horror to be elsewhere, but it seemed like that would open a big can of worms in terms of player expectations (they would want analagous things for other factions). |
I mean... yeah, this is what it does, specifically. |
Sorry -- I don't mean to be flippant or anything, it's just... I mean it says this is what it does, this was the original concept, this is... doing its thing. It's great in enemy territory (maybe), but real hell on your own. That's kind of the point, is that it's meant to blow open opportunities for both sides. It's probably too unpleasant for most people to play with, but to some extent this was a gimmick idea that I just thought was neat, and using some extra art I had created. It's an extra, minor, neat little thing to mess with IF you like that kind of thing, but it's just an extra little freebie. |
That is unfortunate to hear. I was hoping there could at least be an option to disable it from hitting immobiles to avoid the horrid micro. |
It sounds like Badger is creating that option. I worry that it will be horribly unbalanced then, since it will give you all the benefits at none of the pain, but I see the point in adding an option. |
I'd rather have an opt-in "easy mode" for frustrated players than have people get really mad and want to abandon their campaign. I would be open to having the "Don't move player structures around" option count as a Cheat for the purposes of Achievements though. |
I literally abandoned a campaign due to this. The idea I had in mind was to not move any kind of structure, but player-only ones would probably alleviate most of the suffering, Or perhaps some automated way to restore player structures to their original position (perhaps not quickly for balance) if it isn't too much work to add. |
I want to clarify something that I am unsure if I got across - my ideal goal is to reduce the micromanagement, not to make the player immune to the most serious consequences of the chromatic horror. Whether this is too hard to add is another matter. |
Adding a new "rebuild your turrets" option is way outside the scope of available development. |
FWIW, I think that was clearly understood. I think the objection here to the suggestion is/was that the point of the chromatic horror is that it can move immovable structures and cause chaos in doing so. It's the reason for the faction to exist, so if what it does has any kind of automatic restoration/correction feature, it can no longer do the main thing it's designed to do. I.e., an analogy would be nanocaust who don't get a copy of the ships they destroy, Nomad Planets that don't move, etc. I.e. are they really nanocaust or nomads even if they don't do those things? |
I've added a Galaxy Option to prevent moving the Chromatic Horror from moving player structures. I agree that this kinda defeats the point of the faction, but enough players will complain that I think it's worth it. The setting's description says "Disabling this will remove the major downside of the Chromatic Horror, so it will make the game much easier." in the description, so players know they are opting into Easy Mode |
