DescriptionFrom Strategic Sage:

Consider ramping up damage and esp. Durability of NastyPicks considerably; not Alarm Posts and the like, but the ones that fight back. Ion Cannons, Mass Drivers, Fortresses, etc. Make them last long enough to actually do some damage, instead of being a ‘rush to kill that first’ item that you knock out super-quick and then deal with everything else. Just by being more durable, they’ll make the other defenders of a system have more time to pound on the player’s ships. This could be moved to Deathwish/Extreme if desired, it’s not essential in any way but does seem appropriate.

An alternative version of these in xml, just copy_from items, with a different tag that's used in expert mode, would do the trick.

Durability could be increased. IMO the damage of ion canons and mass drivers are already high enough against their counters.

I would recommend a purely durability buff. The damage output of these things is already good place.

Just an add-on to this, I still would like to see the Sponge GP - essentially a GP with absurdly stupid-high HP, enough that it takes a mid-game fleet a couple minutes to kill it. Point of it is a counter to the 'just kill all the GPs to handle an Eye/avoid counter-attack ' strategy.

For Eyes, having them be stricter - more GPs have to go down before the Eye is vulnerable.

After bouncing around some ideas on the discord, a bit more specifics on the Sponge Guard Post. Proposed starting point for testing: 100x normal Guard Post HP for the same mark level, no shields.

Related bit:

* A new is_nasty_pick="true" xml tag is now available for identifying nasty picks.
** Any unit that has a tag with the text "NastyPick" as part of the tag (so "NormalPlanetNastyPick" is fine) get this assigned automatically.

Chris, for Sage's "Sponge Guardpost" concept, would a new xml tag be sufficient to prevent/limit the seeding to expert mode?

In general, I think these guardposts would not be super fun to encounter in the regular game regularly,

Let's not do variant units, those take forever to load on game start, and are hard to maintain. Instead:

* New Human Balance galaxy option: Non-Player Nasty Picks Take Less Damage
** Defaults to off. Forced on for expert mode. If this setting is enabled, then any weaponized 'nasty picks' for planets (eyes, ion cannons, etc) take 1/5th normal damage as they are shot.
** Untested, should work though.

* New Human Balance galaxy option: Non-Player Guard Posts Take Less Damage
** Defaults to off. Forced on for deathwish mode. If this setting is enabled, then any weaponized guard posts in still in the hands of the AI take 1/8th normal damage as they are shot.
** Untested, should work though.
