Summary0024660: Blank screen when starting the game on MacOS High Sierra
DescriptionI have a very old machine which is below the system requirements (a 2011 Macbook Pro with 8 gigabytes of ram and an Intel HD 3000 integrated GPU with 512 megabytes of ram).

Prior to the 2.768 beta, I was able to play the game with the ship models off and a general lag when switching from the planet to the galaxy view..etc.

The game now starts but all i see is a blank screen (tried in both windows and fullscreen mode) and I can hear the music playing so the game isn't hung but it looks like Unity isn't finding a compatible graphical device.

I understand that the machine is ancient so if it can't be supported now that OpenGL is out on MacOS then that's okay (I have another machine that I can play on).

I took a look at an older log and noticed that it was using OpenGL instead of Metal (not sure if I ever tried running it under Metal).

I am mainly seeing "Null graphics device detected. Skipping effect silently." from Amplify Bloom. It may be that the problem is something that we can resolve because of that; since that's a fullscreen effect, it may be blanking out the screen by accident on metal for you.

Could you do me a favor and look in this file? ~/Library/Logs/Arcen Games, LLC/AIWar2/Player.log

If there are any extra error messages in there, that would be useful to know.

Actually -- somewhat scratch that. In 2.768 there will be a TON of errors related to shaders. If you can run the game again in 2.769, and let me know if it still has the problem, and if so post that other log, that would be very helpful.

I just spent a goodly while getting my own under-spec MacBook from 2011 (this one has an intel HD 4000 and an NVideo 640 M, though), and it's running better than ever now. But it may be that something about amplify bloom isn't supported in Metal on your particular hardware, and if so then I can probably just make it turn off.

This is probably fixed as of a month or so ago. If you run it in OpenGL mode rather than Metal, probably that will work now. Fingers crossed!

Hello Chris, I just wanted to thank you for fixing this bug. Because of it I wasn't playing anymore (I am using a MacMini 2011) and because of it hadn't bought the last DLC when it came out. I just bought it (on Gog) yesterday :-) and maybe I will now be able to get my wife into the game which would mean a second purchase. Good for you.

I wanted to subscribe on arcen forum but you just disabled it :-(. Don't you fear to loose all the content on Discord the day this proprietary platform you don't control will disappear ?

Anyway, I will just add that if I am a customer of Arcen Games (having played a bit at AI War I, been a backer of AI War II, bought AI War II when it came out on Gog anyway), it's because of all the writings you do about coding your games and managing your enterprise. I think I have spent as much time reading you, as I had spent playing AI War :D.
