Description | Hi, after some time off, I came back to the game over the weekend and ran into some problems: The game updated to 2.715. It loads fine, but the performance doesn't seem great. The lobby shows fps less than 10, and my mouse pointer feels like it's moving through treacle. I tried the tutorials for a refresher, and these showed the game performance between 60 and 80%. The hover text suggested this is due to system load, but task manager showed only 10% cpu usage, and plenty of ram to spare. Tooltips also keep flickering which is quite offputting; in some cases making them impossible to read. I figured the situation could be improved in newer versions of the game. I first tried updating to the latest beta. This crashed after getting through most of the loading steps; it didn't get to the lobby. I thought the latest stable beta might work, so tried that. This also crashed, without getting through the loading steps. I tried searching for similar issues, and some suggestions included disabling the steam overlay, and running the exe directly rather than starting from steam. Neither helped me, though they could be the cause of another couple of issues I experienced. I went back to 2.715 and continued the tutorials. I got a crash on tutorial 4, which happened just as the hack completed, which I guess is when the achievement got awarded. I believe this was while I had the steam overlay disabled. I've reenabled the overlay, and received achievements without issue since. At one point I opened the game and went to tutorials and there were none; I thought this is when I started direct from the exe, though I'm now unsure which version that was on. I've retried it with 2.715 and the tutorials appeared fine; but after retesting and restarting from steam, the tutorials were missing. And a further reload and they're back again! One other severe issue I encountered occurred when going to the Network tab in settings. This could be because the game is blocked by firewall. While it didn't crash the game, it left it very slow to respond and just generating the same error over and over with the only option being closing the game. I tried all versions with both DirectX11 and the OpenGL options. In all cases, choosing OpenGL led to the game hanging before the OS eventually terminated it for being unresponsive. Summary: 1. Low lobby fps 2. In game performance slow despite low system load 3. Flickering tooltips (varying from several seconds on and milliseconds off, to milliseconds on with longer intervals off) 4. Beta versions won't load 5. Tutorial crash on receiving achievement 6. Missing tutorials 7. Network settings error 8. OpenGL hangs game Despite all the above, I'm still able to enjoy a campaign in 2.715 by speeding it up; just be nice to have it performing at full capacity, and to see the new stuff! | ||||

I've now had another crash when receiving an achievement. Haven't turned the steam overlay off since trying it at the weekend, so it's probably not to do with that. |

Hi, thanks for the report. What OS are you on? Can you post your player log from the latest beta on that OS? Windows: C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\Arcen Games, LLC\AIWar2\Player.log macOS: ~/Library/Logs/Arcen Games, LLC/AIWar2/Player.log Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Arcen Games, LLC/AIWar2/Player.log In general, the 2.715 version is vastly out of date, and will soon be replaced by the beta, so if the beta doesn't run for you then soon none of the game will run for you. I'd like to get that sorted out. To your numbered items: 1. That is mostly resolved in the new beta. That's a more intensive scene than the entire rest of the game, particularly on older GPUs. But it's much more performant in the new beta. 2. There's a known memory leak that I'm looking at, but I think that's only on the beta. I don't know of that in the pre-beta. I can't think why that would be the case in that area. 3. I don't recall hearing of the flickering tooltips before. A lot has changed in the beta, so once we get that working for you, it may be a non-issue. 4. That we need to get sorted before revisiting anything else. 5. Fixed in the beta already, I think. 6. If you can paste what the error is, that would be very helpful. It is almost certainly because of your firewall; the game is trying to find out your public and local IP addresses to display it for you. No more telling people "open the command line and do xyz." 7. Thanks on the first one! * In the event that you have a software firewall running, or something to that effect, then the networking tab will now show "Error Checking Public IP" as your public IP address rather than popping up an endless string of errors. |

Okay, on the remaining subjects for now, here's where I'm at: 1. Very strangely, on the latest beta, your Player.log files are empty of anything remotely meaningful! They don't even get through the full startup sequence. Is there anything in the ArcenDebugLog.txt file from your PlayerData folder? I'm guessing that if there are exceptions, they must be in there. 2. The tutorials thing... is odd. It should be making a call to your disk to find them, along the lines of what is happening with savegames. Let me see if I can find that, though. Overall there are a LOT of changes coming in the next build which are aimed at performance. That said, if you are on version 2.768 and having awful performance on the main menu, that is very surprising and a bit alarming. |

For number 2: * We have had occasional reports of the list of tutorials being empty. This looks to have likely been a problem with some of the multithreaded way we parse the xml files that contain these. These are loaded very differently from quick starts or savegames, turns out. The solution we have in place for now is to have it trigger a rebuild of the tutorial data if it is not found when you open the tutorial menu. If there are ever any times where that is still blank, then we have a larger problem. Thanks! |

Sorry, no errors for you, but logs attached anyway. The missing tutorials I've only seen twice, and I think both were after starting from the exe rather than within steam, but certainly the second time I saw the issue, when I started from the exe the tutorials were there, but on the subsequent start from steam, they were missing. This is very interesting anyhow, with your logs. Mostly everything looks as I would expect, but one thing that I see is that in an OpenGL format, your GPU only has 1GB of VRAM, whereas in DX11 it has 1.5GB available. That's a huge difference! This is all system RAM, since this is an integrated GPU, so it's entirely feasible that the OS is actually choosing to allocate it this way versus it being a reporting error. So when you load up the latest beta on DirectX11 -- let's stay away from OpenGL for you -- what is happening? It's very laggy in general, and tooltips are flickering, and so on? Does anything get added to the log after you load up the game and move around and hover over some things and see the flicker? Sometimes low performance during the game itself is because it's absolutely hammering a log file in the background with invisible errors, but usually we avoid that these days and actually show the errors. |

Oh! In terms of in-game performance, does it improve dramatically if you turn off the ship models? Your machine is very likely to be GPU-bound rather than CPU or RAM bound. In the upcoming next beta, I have some notable reduction to the size of some cubemaps, and so things may run a lot more smoothly for you even with models on. All of our shaders have also (in the next build, not this one) been recompiled against the very latest standards, too. So there may be a notable improvement in the next build, but I'm not positive. |

Latest beta crashes every time, including DirectX11! All the performance issues noted are for 2.715 (and what led me to try the beta version in the first place). I'm happy to go into more detail if you'd like, but given all the improvements already in the beta branch, I suspect I'd just be pointing you to issues you've fixed already! |

Yep, understood on 2.715. On the latest beta, that is extremely surprising. Can you do a verify local file cache on steam, and then post the player.log and ArcenDebugLog.txt file from running with DX11? There may not be much in there, but even if it only shows how far it gets before the log cuts off, that might be useful. |

All the files yesterday were from 2.768. I've updated to 2.770 (and verified the files for good measure!). Sadly it still crashes. Logs attached. I've also attached logs for 2.715 for comparison - took copies once the lobby came up. Main differences seem to be the unity version and the vram allocation. As you noted, huge difference between 1 and 1.5GB, yet it seems 2.715 is getting just 1GB and is the one that loads! I checked Intel's site, and found that there were newer graphics drivers, so I've updated them, but that hasn't helped either. ArcenDebugLog.2.715DirectX11.txt (8,937 bytes)

VRAM is kind of a fuzzy topic when we're talking about the on-die integrated GPUs that are part of the CPU. Essentially, this is the working memory for the GPU part of your CPU. You can absolutely load more stuff in than is supported there, but it just runs slower because it pulls stuff in and out of main memory. However, your main memory is directly depleted by VRAM of this sort (unlike with a dedicated GPU). A dedicated GPU has its own VRAM (that is also faster) on its own card. It takes nothing away from system RAM if you have 8GB of VRAM on your GPU. However, a built-in GPU on the die of the CPU will directly take that 1GB or 1.5GB of regular RAM away from the system, and use it for the GPU instead, while it is active. So if you had 6GB of system RAM, you effectively now have 5 or 4.5 GB of system RAM, is really the only side effect. |

You have 16GB of system RAM, I see. That should be really sufficient for anything and everything with this. I see that you have an error in there that states: d3d11: CreateDXGIFactory2(...) not found, fallbacking to CreateDXGIFactory1(...). d3d11: QueryInterface(IDXGIFactory5) failed (80004002). In the older version of the game, on an older version of unity, it was just this for you: GfxDevice: creating device client; threaded=1 d3d11: QueryInterface(IDXGIFactory5) failed (80004002). THAT said, I'm not convinced that's actually what is going on here. It looks very strongly like it is crashing around the time that steamworks integration is fired up. If you completely kill Steam -- in other words, Exit Steam and make sure it's not hiding and still running -- does the game launch? I suspect that may work. Yeah, fortunately RAM isn't usually a problem unless I'm doing a lot at once! Okay. Progress of sorts: I closed down steam completely, and 2.770 finally made it to the lobby! On my first attempt, I just left it there for maybe a minute or two and then closed it. Then I tried it a second time, and again made it to the lobby, but this time it kind of stuttered a bit and then died. Hopefully a plus - there's a crash dump and error log associated with this. Interestingly, it looks like it's using OpenGL. I didn't get the choice like I did with steam, so I assume that's the default option. Is there a way to use DirectX11 when opening outside of steam? I can give that a go and see if it works any better. Ah -- yes, you can force it to directx11 with the command line argument -force-d3d11 From your log above, I note the following: GfxDevice: creating device client; threaded=1 OpenGL 4.5 is not supported on this platform. That's kind of interesting. Badger brought up a good point today, actually -- did you know that Windows 7 is past its EOL in general at the moment? It no longer gets even critical security updates. Drivers and such are progressively more out of date, so far as I know, as well, though that would vary by vendor. Since Jan 2020, running windows 7 puts you at direct risk from a lot of malware that has known exploits but that Microsoft won't patch any longer. |

Thank you! That's done the trick. I've successfully been able to play a game in version 2.775 :) Agreed about Windows 7. It's not ideal, but for now, it's what I've got. I've looked into Intel's support for OpenGL4.5. They have updated drivers that support Windows 7, but not their HD4000 graphics. Guess that's two things I maybe need to look at upgrading. Any idea why steam would be causing it to fail in the more recent versions? It would be nice to have it working with that! |

Wonderful that this did the trick! In terms of why Steam is causing that problem, it is apparently not the overlay (that would be the usual culprit, but you turned that off), so instead it has to do with the API callbacks from Steam. Essentially, to have Steam integration, Valve provides us with a dll, and we link against that and make calls into that which then get routed through your OS to the steam client, and the Steam client does some stuff. In rare cases where there is an error, USUALLY that happens in the Steam client itself, since most of their code exists in that process. Their own dlls that they give to us are essentially just a bridge, by design. That way they can keep updating the Steam client, but old games released in 2008 still have a bridge -- 13 years out of date -- that works perfectly with their new client. Anyhow, so that model generally works really well. However, it's important to understand that the bridge is essentially loaded into the GAME process, and so if it encounters any super fatal errors, it will crash the game process and not the Steam client itself. This is, usually, quite rare. Their bridge is stable and small for good reason, because they want to basically never force old games to be updated or suddenly lose compatibility with logging achievements. So the bridge has to be almost empty and just focused on talking, from a game to the Steam client. And it needs to be stable over decades. That has generally proved to be true, in my observation, having worked on games with Steam integration since 2009. Most cases where the steam integration crashes the client are actually the steam overlay, because that is an injection via either directx or opengl, and that comes with its own risks. That's kind of a hijack-y way to get Valve's overlay into any game (the process is literally called injection), but it's widely used by various tools like Steam or various voice chat programs, etc. Usually when there is a problem it's either a driver thing or a new version of the Steam client thing. In other rare cases, it can be the underlying game engine that changes something and then things suddenly stop working. This is usually when a new low-level rendering pipeline is introduced, or something of that sort. Nothing like that has happened in the versions of unity we upgraded from/to, so why this would happen is a bit of a mystery to me. The other culprit could be antivirus or anti-malware software. I mentioned how there's all this cross-process talking happening via the bridge, and directx injection, and so on? That style of programming can also be used by malware to do all sorts of nasty things. So sometimes antivirus will pick up on that and kill the "invasive" thing. When they do that and the "invasive" thing is a part of a larger game process, then the antivirus is winding up killing the actual game itself. Whitelisting AI War 2, and/or the Steam client, might solve those issues if that's what it is. |
