Summary | 0024093: Threat fleet has commitment issues when you psuedo-partition the galaxy
Description | When you psuedo-divide the galaxy (see below for an example of what I am talking about), threat fleet tends to have commitment issues. They will fly to one of your planets, and despite there being enough threat heading there that they would be strong enough to take on your defenses if they all arrived, part of them will give up, and fly to some other planet, taking the long path, and then repeating as they arrive at different times. This is one mid-term behavior kind of those things that is difficult to demonstrate in a save, but I will try to find one that makes the behavior obvious (threat build-up that gives up prematurely). What do I mean by "psuedo-divide"? I mean these sorts of configurations appear as a subgraph of your galaxy map ("P" is player planet, "A" is AI planet, | and -are wormhole connections, "." is filler you should ignore because mantis is collapsing spaces) P - A - A - (lots of A) - A - P or A - (lots of A) - A |.........................| P - P - P - P - P - P (Notice, subgraph, so there can be a lot of wormhole connections in addition. This does NOT just show up in snake and ring maps)

The savior actually turns out to be hunter fleet, which seems to be better at telling when they will be able to gather enough force to take on a planet and pull the trigger once they concentrate enough. After the AI starts getting some presence, then the threatfleet will finally be willing to come in |
Ok, I think I got a save with a repro. Two things going on: 1. A large amount of threat, but little attacking as i think most is flying from one end of the galaxy to another back and forth 2. You will notice a large threat buildup forming on Aka (near the bottom left of the galaxy) because a CPA recently went off, and despite there being more then enough to crush my defenses on the adjacent planet Seruta on its way, part of it will give up and fly away before they all arrive, despite that if they waited a bit longer they would have built up enough to attack me |
Hmm, the saves didn't upload. Trying again. |
This is just threat, not Hunter? Threat isn't very smart. |
Why is there that much threatfleet in the first place? I thought if there was that much, they would just go to the hunter after a while. |
maybe threat should convert into hunter sooner to prevent this much buildup waffling around the galaxy? |
I have the problem that even hunter just chill. I recently attacked the AI HW, then spend time cleaning out the 5 Mark VI around it, and both hunter and warden didn't bother pulling forces back. It was trivial to overwhelm each planet in detail. Hunter will sometimes attack, but even then it never commit everything. I can't remember the last time my threat went below 100 after it reach 300-400, it just keeps going up thorough the whole game, with some hundreds strength planets just... having a bunch of ships that stay there. |
> Why is there that much threatfleet in the first place? I thought if there was that much, they would just go to the hunter after a while. Well I guess that is part of the problem. A lot of threat fleet is flying around, neither attacking nor going hunter, or at least not in a timely fashion. |
The hunter will just chill if it thinks it can't win. And right now, potentially turrets are being overvalued. I'm not sure why those various other threat ships would not join the hunter, though, that's really odd. Having them in the hunter would make the hunter way more likely to be successful. And indeed, the threatfleet itself has minimal brains. |
I would've thought that the threat fleet would be more stupid and rush in. That is, if the fleet doesn't sense a counter-threat nearby - say, nothing significant within 3 hops. |

* The game now tracks a new BecameThreatfleetAtGameSecond on each entity. When it is detected than an AI Sentinels ship is in Threat status (meaning it would show up as Threatfleet), it now logs the current game second so that it remembers how long it has been threat. * Added a new seconds_threat_exists_as_threat_before_joining_hunter_fleet on AI difficulty, which is currently set to 2x seconds_threat_waits_before_joining_hunter_fleet for all AI difficulties. ** This sets a new and absolute timer on how long threat can be threatfleet for the AI Sentinels before getting transfer orders to the Hunter Fleet. ** Previously, based on the other timer, if the AI Sentinels threatfleet is engaged in whatever activities, even if that activity is indecision, then it would never switch to the hunter side. ** This makes it impossible for ultra-long-term threatfleet to remain in the galaxy, unless it is pointed at a non-human faction, or it is of a specific type that can't convert (usurper, overlord phase 2, drones, etc). ** Overall in some edge case savegames, this makes it so that suddenly a bunch of idle threatfleet that was too stupid to figure out your particular empire now gets converted to the far-smarter hunter faction and joins teams dismantling you. It's not instant, but if you wait around with that savegame that you have there on 500% speed, the threatfleet switches to the hunter and absolutely wrecks you. |
