Summary | 0023587: Thoughts for later: alternative win conditions via hostile base game factions.
Description | I would see this as being something that we think of as being alongside some major new DLC3 features, and potentially these DLC3 features are then also compatible with the other hostile factions in DLC1 and DLC2. But basically the idea is "what if there were more things like the imperial spire fleet?" For nanocaust, it seems like one way to handle that might be to encourage a crazy amount of brinkmanship by using some sort of new device that DLC3 adds that lets you aid them in expanding while still not being their friend. If you can get them to control something like 50% of the galaxy while not consuming you, then you can use this other device from DLC3 that suddenly co-opts them and they become your allies and murder the hell out of the AI on your behalf. For factions that are already your friend, or that won't attack you for whatever other reason, this sort of thing wouldn't work. Probably. The idea would be to help introduce some other major threat in the galaxy, try to let it thrive while also trying not to get murdered yourself, and then win from there. Making these sorts of things compatible with the base game factions, and with some of the factions from the first two DLC seems like the sort of thing that then gives value to holding all the DLC without requiring someone to. It was just something I was thinking about, so I figured I would note it down.

This sounds amazing. But also an idea - perhaps a way to destroy dark spire wards remotely, but require the dark spire to have gone rampant and taken over much of the galaxy. |
I am super open to any ideas that people have on ideas that they find interesting for various factions. I outlined one for the nanocaust, but I don't want every faction to just feel like more of the same. I'm also not set on just having ONE new victory condition for various factions, come to that. If they are each sufficiently challenging and interesting to play, and probably not that hard to code, then having two or even three different ways for winning via just the dark spire alone is something that I find absolutely fine and fun. Or maybe there are areas where you have to have "any two factions from the dark alliance" to be able to go down that path, or where "macrophage eats the devourer and then supercharges against the AI" or whatever other multi-faction interactions, that gets pretty interesting pretty fast. |
I like the notion of "New scary enemy shows up. AI offers you a truce to defeat them. You can choose whether to accept it or take your chances alone. And then the AI may or may not backstab you if the war starts going well." |
Not...exactly a victory path directly, but it was I believe a rarely seen thing (nobody else seems to have encountered it, and there's no mention). If you let a Dyson Converter (an Antagonizer that upgraded after being active for a while) live long enough, it becomes a Dyson Annihilator, which destroys the Sphere and MK3 Nukes the galaxy. There doesn't seem to be an actual unit for this thing, it just happens as soon as the process of a Converter finishes. Suppose that's kind of a "MAD" scenario, then you try to kill the AI quickly. ...The lack of mention of this thing makes me wonder if I just imagined it...I guess if someone had access to the code they could confirm. |
This is a fun idea, to be sure. If the hostile force has found some sort of weakness in the AI that allow them to bypass entire parts of the ai forces, and thus they turn to you, the flawed humans, for help. So while they bring their guns to bear directly at the threat; you're in charge of taking down key structures and offensive forces that have managed to cloak themselves from the Hunter/Warden fleets. |
Macrophage eating the devourer golem sounds quite nice seeing how ineffectual they seem to be in all my campaigns. It's nice to see ways to make factions become relevant/scale up. Perhaps some way to awaken more of the dyson sphere, so instead of dealing with some isolated subsystem, it would be able to use more of its power. It would be very angry at being provoked and send fleets to try to kill everything. Maybe this state could be achieved by hacking a dyson miner trying to kill the sphere or through hacking a (perhaps mk 7) dyson antagonizer. |
I can't find the actual code that really does the "Annihilator destroys the galaxy", but there are definitely references to that behaviour in the aiwc code base. |
Well, with fleets being a thing in AIW2, that would certainly be an interesting way to end the game and have a last ditch "fistfight in the ashes of the galaxy" with the AI. I'm also keen on the AI potentially being an ally against another large threat, but then maybe stabbing you in the back if things go too well. Lots of good ideas in here, its definitely something to keep tossing ideas in where people have them. :) |

Cut, though modders could do things with it. |
