Summary | 0023568: save broke; perhaps a deeper settings issue | ||||
Description | I decided to disable ship models just to see if it would help my game run faster. I won, and everything was fine until I decided to boot up the next day. I was in windowed mode, and I had a weird message, and I knew that my settings had been reset because it was loading the ships again. I'll attach the save file and some of the debug text. Note that my computer had to be shut off so one of the loading attempts stops abruptly. | ||||

Can you copy your newsettings.dat and newsettings.bak files from the PlayerData subdirectory? It looks like something has corrupted those files. |

Here they are. I forgot to mention that when I tried to load the save it seemed to think it wasn't from the right version, and didn't list a number. I forget exactly what it said, but I think that just reaffirms what you said. |

Thank you! I can't fix your broken save, but I think I can prevent this from happening again, as it was probably related to bad settings data. There was a cascade of wrong stuff that led to this particular one, but that should no longer be possible: * If for whatever reason the game was not able to proeprly write your settings data, it was still overwriting your settings file previously. It will no longer do that. ** Additionally, a lot of extra instrumentation has been put into GameSettting.SerializeGraphicsTo and GameSettting.SerializeTo, so that we will know better what is wrong if it is trying to save improperly. These should also be more resistant to saving incorrectly in the first place. * If a savegame has somehow been made that has a blank savegame in it, then it will try to load it with the info of the current version of the game, with a warning in the log that this may fail very badly. * Fixed a case where trying to load certain saves could fail silently as far as the interface was concerned. Now it actually shows you a proper error message. ** And then fixed a whole bunch of cases where certain code paths on almost-certainly-broken saves would return very genric and unhelpful errors when you tried to load them. ** This doesn't really help us actually load the savegames in question, but tells us more about what is wrong with them. |
