Summary | 0023317: Force Field Frigate interferes with learning to play and so should not be in default starting fleet
Description | Force Field Frigates are super cool and powerful, but I think they're a bad fit for the default starting fleet. That's what new players are most likely to pick, and the force field frigate completely throws off a bunch of very basic gameplay elements. Autokite? Turn it off, you want all your ships under the FFF bubble. Different units have different ranges, speeds, and bonuses? Ignore all that; it's all going to move at the speed of the FFF, you're going to park the FFF right next to the target to accommodate the shortest ranged ships, and all you care about is whether the enemies counter the FFF itself. Even the basics of refleeting via factories, bringing combat factories along, and ensuring you have income: having a FFF soak damage dramatically reduces your casualty rate. These mechanics are the bedrock of the gameplay. Exposing new players to them as quickly and thoroughly as possible seems important. I don't think starting them with an FFF is the best way to do that. I think having a starting fleet that comes with a FFF is great, mind you, all of the above are really interesting twists on the basics for someone who understands the basics. I'm not sure what to swap it with, though. If there was a pure anti-armor frigate (like a bigger pike corvette), I'd probably say to put that in. If there was a pure fusion-bomb frigate, I'd say swap that in and then swap the fusion bombers for pike corvettes, stalkers, or ablative gatlings (to keep the swiss-army-knife flavor). Maybe a new frigate that's a hybrid of the pike's anti-armor and the gatling's anti-albedo effects? And while the FF Frigate is a thematic fit for the Doorkicker fleet, it doesn't go well with the Vanguards, so I'm not sure where to move it to.

I think you make a lot of good points. Any thoughts from others on what they'd like to see? I think that a new fleet that is shield-oriented and says so would not be a bad idea. |

Don't think any consensus was reached exactly, but I have firmed up on Vwings, COncussion and Pike Corvettes, and Assault Frigates as the best starting fleet. |
|
I'd support such a change. |

I've been playing with the classic fleet and having a force field frigate is really handy. |
