We did something like that in The Last Federation."
"There were things that, when you first encountered a Giant Nozzle Of Doom, it gave you a tip about that if you had tips turned on, but after that the Giant Nozzles did not tell you every time.
That sort of thing is really kind of a THIRD mechanic, to be honest, but it does seem relevant.
None of those are really hard to implement, it's mainly data-intensive for someone to write and use them."
"The tutorial stuff would just be modal popups that we'd have auto-pause the game using a new auto-pause mechanism.
The new auto-pause would be a harsh "the game hasn't really paused, but I'm not processing more sim steps right now, thanks," which would automatically halt things in multiplayer. It would give the "waiting for Jim..." sort of message.
But not get into situations where Bob and Jim are trying to unpause the game because why is someone pausing it, etc.
That doesn't exist yet either."
