Summary0022901: Broken font in some screens
DescriptionOn an old Sony VAIO laptop running Lubuntu Linux I have a broken font on single lines in some startup screens (see the bottom line in the example attached). Seems there is a font used which my system is not displaying correctly. No problem during game play though. On my desktop PC (running Lubuntu as well) everything is fine. Any idea?

how old of lubuntu? Are you running in vulkan or opengl modre?

Lubuntu 19.04 on both, laptop and desktop PC. Running in opengl mode. But with vulkan it is the same.

That is... extremely strange! I would suggest possibly doing a verification of the local files via Steam, since that can sometimes download incorrectly.

All of the fonts are handled internally by TextMeshPro inside unity, and never touch the OS itself. So why this would be OS-dependent, or machine-dependent, kind of escapes me. To me it looks like it is rendering the size of the letters "correctly," and doing proper kerning and so on, but instead of drawing just the characters it is drawing the entire sprite space of each character as white. That's very perplexing, and usually means a canvas needs to be refreshed when I see that when manually editing stuff in the unity editor (I have seen this before there, but never in the wild).

The verification of the files didn't change anything. But in my case it is OS dependent, because I installed AI-War 2 on the Windows partition on the same laptop. With the DirectX version everything works fine and it doesn't show that issue. (The Windows openGL version does not work at all - shows only a black screen.)

But you shouldn't put effort into this as you have better things to do for sure! This is on a very old Sony laptop with onboard graphics (8 years or so) and probably I am the only person in the world seeing this :-)

Just tested. No changes with V2.702.
Extremely strange if you look at the lower part of the screenshot attached: The first "Disabled" is broken, the others below are OK.

After running and seeing this, are there any errors in your ~/.config/unity3d/Arcen Games, LLC/AIWar2/Player.log?

This is apparently a super rare issue on linux with TextMeshPro, and oftentimes is a matter of the drivers or opengl version being out of date. What surprises me is that it is not universally broken, versus just being partly broken like this. All of those buttons are using identical font and code, which is very strange to have breaking like that.

There is no Player.log file in that folder. I have one in the "AI War" folder and one in the "The Last Federation" folder, but not in the AIWar2 folder. There is only a "prefs" file. I just checked my desktop PC installation of AIWar2: Same there.
Could it be that logging is deactivated? Can I activate that myself?

-logFile <pathname> Specify where Unity writes the Editor or Windows/Linux/OSX standalone log file. To output to the console, specify - for the path name. On Windows, specify - option to ensure output goes to stdout, which is not the console by default.
