Summary | 0022446: Move save games to Home Directory (for ease of backup)
Description | On Windows 10: Many of the games I have these days put their saves & configurations into this location (your home\Documents\MyGames\Game Name). (Examples: Into the Breach, FTL, Path of Exile, Borderlands 3, F1 2019, Rocket League, They Are Billions, so you see it's not particularly genre-specific nor AAA vs Indie.) I suggest putting the saves & other "Player Data" into there. I don't know how that will impact Steam save syncing. I do know I am not a fan of having important data to back up in the same directories as programs, because I then have to manually tell my back up program to back up that directory. There may be a similar "home-based" location for Mac (e.g., Library/Application Support) and Linux (~/.aiwar2/...). Thanks!

That's the Windows XP directory, and that OS is depricated. If using Windows Vista or newer, saved games should be found in %userprofile%\Saved Games\ - and technically it should be taken from a function call described here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/shell/knownfolderid |
I don't mind where it is, as long as it is located in my home folder somewhere where things get backed up by default. :) |
On my gaming PC, I see several games using @Sigma7's Saved Games directory: The Outer Worlds, Elite Dangerous, Steel Division, etc. Most use a Vendor\GameName subdirectory, but TOW uses something else. TOW is a Windows Store game, though. It has __LOCAL__ and some ################ subdirectory. |
I know this is preferred by some folks, and there are certain benefits, but it is something that I've considered for the last 11 years and decided on repeatedly that in the folder is best in terms of general portability and a few other factors, particularly cross-OS. It does have other disadvantages such as the note about backups, but we had a lot of public discussions and debates about this for a number of our games (since every game we ever made works like this), and ultimately came down to this location. Moving the location just for some people wouldn't work as it would break steam sync among many other things, and OSes tend to be kind of problematic, especially older windows ones. |
Keep in mind that you can just make a symlink from "AIW2 Saves Directory" to wherever you want... |
Very true -- I've done that for some other software on windows 10, even. |
