Summary | 0021172: Selection persists when switching to galaxy map and back into a different planet view
Description | Not sure if this is a bug, but it's at least confusing behavior and it's tripped me up several times. If you select unit A in planet view, then tab out to the galaxy map and select a different planet, unit A remains selected. This makes sense. If you then tab into the new planet, unit A will no longer be selected. This makes some sense, if you're used to AIW1's behavior where you can only select things on the current planet. Tab back out without selecting anything and A is selected again. That isn't obviously crazy, but maybe a little counterintuitive. Where it gets really weird, though, is if you tab into the new planet and select a new unit B. While you're looking at that planet, only B will be selected, but if you tab back out, your selection now includes A *and* B. This matches what I'd expect if I'd held shift when selecting B, but is super confusing when it happens on accident.

Repro instructions for the attached save: 1. Select the engineering battlestation at Dalarna. 2. Tab out and select Drakon on the galaxy map. Engineering battlestation remains selected. 3. Tab into Drakon. Battlestation is no longer selected. Select the interceptor citadel at Drakon. 4. Tab back out to the galaxy map. Both units are now selected. |
I think I might prefer it if per-planet selection behavior was just removed entirely, so that e.g. when tabbing into Drakon the engineering battlestation remains selected and can be given move orders to specific points on Drakon. I've been wishing for this for a while anyway -- I'd love to be able to select a bunch of raid starships, click over to an adjacent planet, and give an attack order on a data center or something without having to wait for them to move through the wormhole first. |
This can also happen if, from planet view, you select a control group that doesn't have any ships on the current planet. For example: 1. Start up a new campaign. 2. Send your starting fleet to any planet. 3. Switch back to your homeworld, leaving your fleet behind. 4. Press '1'. 5. Select an engineer. 6. Tab out to the galaxy map, and your selection now includes both the engineer and your starting officer fleet. I've been running into this a lot, and it causes huge problems when I'm moving fleets around. I'll often tab into a planet, press control groups until I find the one corresponding to the ships on that planet, tab out to the galaxy map, and then give a movement order -- but this also gives the movement order to all of the random fleets that I invisibly selected while trying to find the right control group. |
This is working as intended, but now it LOOKS like it properly. The selection code in general has been redone a lot, as has the selected ships/fleets window. |
