Summary0021121: Tie exploration to "cartography stations" or something instead of command stations
DescriptionI love the idea of a frontier of visibility that expands to cover the whole galaxy over the course of the early to mid game, but I think right now it happens too quickly. I think it would be cool if, instead of scouting every time you destroy a new AI command station, the game would seed cartography stations across the map and scout when you destroy/capture those. That would slow down exploration a bit so that it still remains a factor later into the midgame, and also make it a bit more tactical. Maybe there could even be a hack you can do against these stations to trigger the exploration tick without capturing the planet.

We did something like that in the very early versions of AIW2, and generally people didn't like it because it was one more piece of busywork to do.

Overall people wind up wanting to see the map before too long, and will go out of their way to do so. The current system forces those people to slow down a bit, while still giving you some stages of seeing the map. Anything that makes people do extra work to scout I'm not in favor of, because some people will abuse it and then complain. And in the late game I don't expect scouting to be a thing anyway, or else you're acting on incomplete info and everybody just goes through the pain of scouting early anyway to get around that blindness that they find uncomfortable.

I see what you're going for, and I do like the concept in some ways, but the reality is that people make things super unfun for themselves if you give them the slightest chance. Overall the scouting system is just designed to make information come at you a little slower in the early game, not let you get around that, and then otherwise get out of your way. If you think about how most people play most strategy games, that's what winds up happening anyhow. We all wait for our automated scouts to finish scouring the landscape, etc.
