Summary0015980: Solar Map: Restrict Orbital Bombing dispatch to planets without defending armadas?
DescriptionCurrently it is really easy to simply obliterate a race by bombing even if it is thoroughly protected in space by defending armadas.

The dispatch being as powerful as it is, limiting its use to undefended planets might be a good way to limit its availability without nerfing the heck out of it - especially with regard to the Obscura (see related issue).

Also the credit cost likely should be upped.
I am against reducing its effectiveness, though. That would be frustrating.

Considering the frequency bombing would be stopped as planets launched new fleets (even when massively overwhelmed) this would be tiresome at best. I'd recommend rather just upping the cost as well as weakening the power of the bombs while increasing the effect the related technologies have upon it. (And do let it be noted, that under the right conditions,... races can reproduce just as fast as you can bomb them if not FASTER as it is.) So for a quick and dirty way to get things done, it remains viable but still unreliable enough to make up for its admirable efficiency.

It could lose effectiveness as the defender gets more fleet strength in orbit around the planet, but unless you have friendly armadas present to keep them down you might still be annoyed by having to stop every so often to clean the defenders up.

Fair enough on both accounts. I have to admit I always imagined the condition for no defending armadas to take effect only at the time the dispatch is started, not as something that has to be true for as long as the dispatch is running.

I like the mitigated effects idea, although I am afraid this might be too complex to implement. Having the dispatch cancelled every time a new armada is constructed is definitely undesirable. Maybe using a softer threshold for cancelling the dispatch based on relative power levels would be a compromise?

Having to pop out of the dispatch once in a while if there are too much armadas for the dispatch to be effective anymore would be okay in my book.

And, as I said, the cost definitely should be increased. Even more so after the changes to the credit economy...

For 1.609:

* The recently-added Orbital Bombing dispatch now costs more, and is less effective, proportional to the size of the planet's dedicated defense armadas. It costs still more, and is still less effective, against Obscura-held planets.
