Summary | 0000155: Graphics for units missing in lobby; only 2-3 player start locations created
Description | Intended? -- only 2 or 3 player start locations are being generated for some seeds -- 1307617187 only has 3 starting locations. On that same seed (all expansions enabled) planet Vibirib (plane) has no ship graphic associated with it. Selecting / unselecting that planet does change the circle used as background to the player color (and back, when unselecting it) but there is no unit graphic.

F12 is not capturing a screenshot to show this. Before I file something new: - It doesn't put the image in the clipboard - It doesn't put the image in /AIWar/RuntimeData/Screenshots/ Any other place to look? |
Uploading Screenshot showing this issue. 5 starting locations in screenshot. The other 3 locations seem to exist, just the icon is not drawn. Note that in my screenshot I have moused over a planet with no ship icon but the pop says that planet will start me with Youngling Tiger. If I select Wigficau as my starting planet, I do actually start with youngling tigers so this seems to be a display issue with the starting ships in the galaxy map. Note also along the bottom and right edges that the white dot representing a planet is not displayed although if you mouseover where a planet it, the name popup for that planet still appears. Once the game is started, no gameplay effect noted as of yet. |
Dazio, my screen is slightly different than your image. - I do get some planets where the white dot does not appear as you do. - On one of my planets, I get the "circle" as background (yours are yellowish in the image) but there is no unit icon in the center. (how did you get the image? I'm still on the screen to get it) |
To get the image I hit Print Screen then manually pasted it into Irfanview, I didn't use the game's own screenshot function. On your planet where you are getting the circle, does the mouseover have a ship description? My suspicion is that the galaxy map is working correctly game mechanic-wise, it's just the display is going wonky somehow. |
Yes, the circle does have the ship description. |
Definitely not intended to ever have few than 8 possible starts, but it has been known to happen from time to time. We'll look at this, thanks. |
Hmm, I can't duplicate this at all in 3.702 -- maybe Keith changed something related, I'm not positive. Or maybe my other changes to the lobby somehow fixed this (they should not have, but I guess it's conceivable). But I'm not getting the same ships seeded in the start positions you show, so I'm wondering if maybe you have some specific map-related settings enabled on one of those tabs in the lobby. After 3.702 comes out, would you mind looking at this again and seeing if it's still there? And if so, can you just post screens of each of your tabs in the lobby? Usually we're able to duplicate these sort of issues really easily when someone gives us a seed and a map style, but not here for some reason... |
Sure thing, I assume 3.702 is out sometime tonight / tomorrow? -- if it helps -- 919433594 only displays 2 visible planets. As Dazio pointed out earlier, the other planets exist... if you hover over the star system with the mouse, the tooltip appears correctly. Still not able to grab a screenshot with PrtScrn or F12 or otherwise. Looks like I might need to grab an external program. |
Thanks! And yeah, should be out in an hour or two. That's odd that the tooltips work, that really makes it sound like a graphics thing and not actually a map thing (in the past it was always the latter). Do either of you have one of the expansions disabled by any chance? |
Oh, and your screenshots thing -- it puts it in /AIWar/RuntimeData/Screenshots/. However, I think that the F12 key does not always work -- for instance, it's not working in the lobby. But, it should work in-game, etc. |
That would do it; I'm specifically trying to take a screenshot in the lobby. As for expansions, I have both expansions unlocked. In the Licenses/Expansions, I have both expansions marked as unlocked, and ticked off (green X next to them -- means enabled?? not clear UI design, green for enabled, X for disabled?) |
Yeah, that's a separate bug report -- no screenshots in the lobby. I went ahead and logged that. For the expansions, sounds like you do have them both enabled, then. Yes, the green for on, with the toggle on, rather than the toggle empty. Pretty similar to most every web page form, but we added in an extra bit of coloring to make it even more obvious (for those without colorblindness, at least). That said, there was some confusion here because it was implemented backwards for a while, etc. :/ |
Nitpick: Assuming that is not a literal ASCII letter 'X' in the box, perhaps a green check-mark instead? That being said, now that I understand it, it's not that big a deal, however others may be confused as I was. |
That's true... |
x: On the map bug issue, it was not limited to just a few seeds. There were a few map seeds that showed all 8 start points, but the majority did not out of probably the 20 I looked at. Both expansions enabled. Will check with 3.702 once I can. Sizzle: Ya, Irfanview is the external program I used to get my screenshot. |
Still occurring in 3.702 -- I only had time to briefly check. Have to get ready for work. |
Hummm.... thanks, Dazio and Sizzle for the added info. If one of you wouldn't mind taking some screenshots of your lobby tabs (so I can duplicate all the settings) in 3.702, that would be appreciated! |
Hmm. This actually seems to be a resolution thing. Running 1920x1200 (16:10 ratio) I get this error with only 6 ships displayed. I knock the resolution down to 1280x1024 (4:3 ratio) and all 8 ships display without issue and the planets around the edge also show their dots as expected. Will test more resolutions in a bit once supper finished cooking. |
Alright, all tests are performed without changing any game options, only the screen resolution. Their are two issues I'm testing, fewer then 8 ships displaying and the planets at the bottom and right edge do not have a white dot. As far as I can tell, the actual game options (minor factions, AI plots, etc.) do not affect this. I tested every available game resolution with a desktop resolution of 1920x1200. Most resolutions did not have these issues, only the 1600X1200, 1920X1080, 1920X1200 displayed the errors. An interesting note is that 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 both displayed only 6 ships, 1920x1080 displayed 7 ships. For the record I am running a ATI Radeon 5800 with the latest drivers (updated them just recently trying to fix the Blitz combat style crash.) |
I can confirm the same behavior as Dazio is seeing regarding resolutions. 1024x768 correctly displays all starting locations and their related ship. As a side note, similar to 0000168 on higher resolutions the Arcen games and/or AI War logos are entirely missing for me at higher resolutions. Different resolutions give different results as to which logos are missing as well as which planets on the seed that I am looking at will not display. |
This is very odd... I have two LCD monitors that don't support larger than 1280x1024. Running the game at 1280x1024 looks perfect to me, or stretching it in windowed mode to run more like 2400x1024 also looks perfect with none of these issues. I will see what I can do on my Mac, which has a 16:10 monitor, anyway. Thanks for all the detailed reports, this is most peculiar! |
I should also add that my native resolution is also 1920x1200 same as Dazio |
Can you also look at this and let me know if it's still in 3.703? The orthographic camera fixes may have fixed this, I'm not sure. |
No luck in 3.703 -- same issues. (note I had issues with the updater, see my update in the related bug entry -- but it looks like 3.703 successfully installed) |
0000345 and 0000347 each duplicate one of the issues described here seems i should have searched better |
Should be a duplicate of that other issue, and thus resolved. |
