| Description | This is a request for a special tag called "Is Roof" that could be applied to any BG object. If such a tag existed, the following could all be drawn on top of a building's interior: walls, windows, flooring for a balcony, mounted store signs, vines, etc. In the case of the balcony, it would exist only as decoration on the "ground floor sub-level" but would be an actual location within the "2nd floor sub-level." A mounted store sign could be used, for example, on the west side of Stantonsburg as well as many places in Alden Ridge. For Darrell's house, I wouldn't create a balcony there, as it's already quite a huge house. However, I would show the true height of the house and display the 2nd floor windows where they would actually be encountered on that floor. Upon entering the house, only the 1st floor windows would be displayed. Dreaming further, we could have a 5-story tower from the outside, but when you enter its front door, the tower vanishes, except for that first floor. We discussed this briefly in email; you directed me to the central building of Stantonsburg, but as I replied, this building is actually faulty and doesn't behave the way I've described. (Can't get inside and high windows can be shattered.) Let me know what you think! | ||||

In terms of the flooring for the balcony, that would be a bit tricky because that's not in the background layer, and normally that would be composited in a layer below. What we could potentially do is make it so that there are two flags: -a "BG On Roof" flag that draws all the background stuff (furniture, vines, windows, whatever) higher than the roof and on top of the roof, and lifts that off when you are under the roof as you say. -a "Copy Layer 6 on top of Roof" flag that draws the backdrop layer 6 on top of the roof for your balcony purposes. Thoughts? |

I like these ideas, but as I give it more thought, I'm afraid that I won't be able to place one BG object directly on top of another one. That is, the top BG object should be part of the roof, but when the roof disappears, a different BG object should be in that same position. I wonder how hard it would be to simply have a "roof layer" checkbox similar to the 2nd player checkbox, except that it simply lets you write to the higher plane while it's checked? |

I went back into the Alden Ridge game and discovered that Stantonsburg's central building used to behave in this very manner! You were using a special roof tag called "InvisibleBorderedLiftsOff" which is not ported to the new game. So, you could either create the IsRoof tag as described above, or port this previous roof tag, depending on what's easier to implement and for others to understand. |
