Summary | 0009469: Randomise 'triangle' ships
Description | Rather than giving out the holy trinity of fighter/bomber/frigate (+plus player-selected ship(s)) at the start of every game, shuffle together every available shiptype and pick out three randomly. This would offer much greater variety in the early game, and a lot of desirable second-order effects, like reduced effectiveness of blobbing (because bonus ships are less all-purpose than defaults) and a change of game tone from 'what is the prescribed way to defeat this situation?' to 'how can I use this random grab-bag of tools to invent a unique solution to this unique problem?' Bonus points: do the same for the starship/turret/support/warhead groups, then rebalance around the player not being able to nuke/cloak/transport cheese past everything.

The problem with this is that the four types you get (the three random "triangle" and the bonus ship you choose) could leave you with a massive gap in what you can't counter, and if the AI starts using it heavily, well... The game was balanced around the idea that almost everything has a counter (not necessarily a strong one), and one of those counters is something you are assured to have. As you always have the current triangle of ships, many times one of the counters is one of those ships. If the logic was smart enough to choose three random ships such that those three random ships counter around the same amount the current triangle does, then that would be acceptable. Also, this might make for an interesting game modifier of sorts. Making it optional may make it fun to try every now and then, but being optional, the devs would not have to radically shift things around to keep them balanced no matter what you get. |

The triangle ships are deliberately kept weaker than bonus ships because you always have them. I don't think the game would be beatable without access to a bomber equivalent. |
