Summary | 0008965: MAKE ESCAPE PAUSE THE GAME.
Description | I just got back from a hard day of work and couldn't wait to play some avww. I was about to take down my first lieutenant, I was all prepared, I was thinking about on the drive home. I sit down and I see I'm dead, because I only hit escape and not P. I'm sorry, but that's total BS. MAKE ESCAPE PAUSE THE GAME. It's not like I'm going to go sifting through the Big Honkin' Encyclopedia while I run around. If you don't like the idea of HITTING ESCAPE TO PAUSE THE GAME LIKE EVERY OTHER GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED then at LEAST please make it an option! P.S. Sorry if this comes off as a rant or insult. I'm just mad.

For anyone who plays the game in multiplayer, or indeed plays other multiplayer games, it's very familiar that Esc would not pause the game. Now -- you're playing solo. But my contention has always been that it gets much harder to switch between solo and mp if a button as central as escape works differenytly between the two. There's a reason the planning menu button on your HUD only shows up when you are in the invincibility mode or otherwise in a safe place. |
The P button doesn't pause in multiplayer either, though, so what's the point? Why can't it do both in single player? I don't much like multiplayer, and I don't think I'll ever use it, so once again, could it at least be an option? Finally, I only use the planning menu button in a safe place anyway, so I'd never even noticed I couldn't use it mid-battle. Yeesh, I sound like I'm trying to start an argument. Sorry. |
Sure the p button pauses in multiplayer. In terms of this being an option, I'm open to that. |
Having it be an option for singleplayer is something I could support. But of course, in multiplayer, pause should be an explicit action, no matter which way you have this option set. |
For 1.201: In singleplayer, opening the escape menu now pauses the game. Exiting it via the "back to game" button will unpause it (even if the game was paused before opening the escape menu, and thus it wasn't the menu that paused it), but exiting any other way will leave the game paused. Added a note to the "local chunk is paused" message about what key to press to unpause, to compensate. Thanks :) |
Could you please give a way to turn this off, for those who do not like it? Similarly, will pressing ESC again on the main menu auto-unpause, like clicking the "back to game" button? |
Just for the record, TechSY730's idea was also implemented in the very same update. From the 1.201 release notes: "Added a new toggle to the settings window: "Disable Escape Menu Auto Pause". When this toggle is enabled (by default it is not), the game will no longer pause when you open the escape menu (note that this is always disabled in multiplayer). This also disables the auto-unpause when exiting the escape menu through the "back to game" button. Thanks to TechSY730 for the suggestion... before we even released the auto-pause behavior! " |
ESC on the main menu doesn't unpause when auto pause is enabled, though, which it probably should since that's the logical equivalent to pressing the "back to game" button. |
Mysterial, you should probably make a new bug-reporting thread for that issue. |
