Summary | 0008947: Secret mission site reuse is not fun
Description | Currently, secret missions sites seem to replenish after an hour or so. This is unfun in several ways: * I have to keep track of where the mission sites are. (0008941, 0008272, 0007618) * I have to keep track of when mission sites will replenish. * It encourages me to stick to regions with large buildings (for faster map scanning) rather than regions where I can find new secret missions the fastest. This, in turn, limits the variety of environments I encounter. * It upsets the balance between finding secret missions and finding stash items. I think secret mission sites should become "former secret mission sites" once completed. And to compensate, secret missions should become more common, especially outside the Ice Age.

Keeping track of mission sites isn't really a problem, and keeping track of replenishment isn't really a problem either; the first since it actually helps to encourage exploring regions fully (so you have a few "mission" tiles on the overmap) and the second since generally sunrise / nightfall takes care of it. Making secret missions expirable won't solve the issue of limiting you to certain regions, since then you end up having to go to the regions where they're commonly found instead; it'll only change the regions necessary. The balance between stash rooms and secret missions is currently off anyway in that you generally find far more stash rooms than missions; being able to revisit rooms brings the balance back to being more equal. In addition, how would this work with mission timers? If the mission respawns a new one, then you end up with the same problem as you end up having to wait for the RNG to spit out what you want. If the mission doesn't, it'll get really annoying when the RNG won't spit out what you want and you begin to run out of places to find new secret missions at a reasonable rate. (I'd argue a lot of the issue is more that secret missions are now necessary instead of being a nice bonus - you have no choice but to seek them out (since farming consciousness shards tends to be a bit long and unfun.) I'd prefer to see their rewards also available from overmap missions and spellgems in secret missions - that way, it's also a lot more reasonable to have secret missions be able to give higher rarity spells since there's some more effort in finding them as well.) |

I wouldn't put it in such an extreme way but I do agree that it feels weird that secret missions respawn. Unintuitive, feels like a bug, and it's not like I've ever run out of new places to explore in my games. IMO any balance issues improved by this can be solved another way (plenty of suggestion available) That said, I don't think it's a gamebreaker by any means. |

I agree with BenMiff that making mission sites single use isn't the way to go to fix the issues you mention and that some of your points are negligible for reasons he cites. However, while I'd like mission sites to show up somehow on the region map, I think your 3rd point is more important, with these being the things I'd point out in relation to it: - the ratio of buildings per surface chunk for a region. - the ratio of small to large buildings for that region. - the spawn ratio for mission sites for different building types in that region. - whether those building types frequently spawn mazes or not. Hands down the best region to look for mission sites is the Lava Flats. 3-7 buildings a chunk is typical, Lava Towers have a straight forward layout, Large buildings are more or as common as small ones, no mazes, and the mission site spawn rate is 50-50 or better for Lava Towers. No other region type compares to it in my experience, even Ice Age region types. I may have to try one on a more current continent but the hitherto never visited Ice Age Thawing Plain region on continent-1 failed to deliver much for me. My "mission" tile for continent-4 is a Lava Flat, 44 Lava Towers across 11 surface chunks and 24 of those towers have secret mission sites. Warping between them can be a little bit of a hassle at times but it is still a tremendous convenience I wouldn't trade for single-use mission sites, although I'd love to see more different region types yield similar results. |

This is a tough one. There's definitely room for improvement here, but I'm not entirely sure what the direction that improvement should be. |
