Summary | 0008738: Ice Pirates and City-Building
Description | So it's been a long standing issues that Ice Pirates are unable to be taken on and destroyed. So I was thinking about the new city building system and how it might play into their behavior and it kinda clicked. When a building is placed in the range of an Ice Pirate ship, the ship moves closer after a certain period of time. When they finally get next to (or on top of) the building, they deploy a landing beacon which can be used to enter the ship and destroy them (in much the style of overlord towers). If enough time passes, the ice pirate ship destroys the targeted structure and reorients it's self with another structure to attack. It would be like the mission generation timer for determining when they move to/destroy a structure. I would think this would only apply to profession towers and other large structures (what would they raid from a farm anyway). EDIT: I would also think the Ice Pirate ships would have some kind of boss that would be relatively difficult, making the choice to engage them a pretty big one. Big risk for big reward (nice loot/safety from the bombardment/saving a building).

I like it, except that the game usually allows players to run away from fights that are too tough (or that they simply don't want to face yet), and take their time before confronting the enemy (if ever). Players who didn't confront the ice pirates within a certain time would have their buildings destroyed, which could get annoying. What if they just want to mess around finding Stash rooms, and beating up bosses? I don't think they should feel like every second they spend messing around, there's less and less time before the ice pirates blow up their building. I could see buildings being built within range of ice pirate patrols taking some kind of minor-moderate penalty, but at no risk of being destoyed. That seems realistic and balanced. (How productive can you be when your surroundings are being shelled with snowballs? Most of your co-workers would be distracted into having snowball fights, making snow forts, building snow skelebots, etc :P) |

The primary idea is that the pirates would only engage if the players initiated by placing some kind of building withing the range of the ice pirate ship. perhaps destruction is a bit much, but affecting NPC mood and making buildings less effective is a good idea. |
