Summary | 0007919: Spread around elemental weaknesses more
Description | Three common complaints are that spells and combat feels very "samey", that combat doesn't feel very fluid, and that enemy types don't feel very varied. Something I think that will help (but not alone solve) these issues is a wider distribution of elemental weaknesses. Elemental resistances and weaknesses has been a staple of making enemies and abilities feel more unique and giving rewards for some level of diversification. While the current balance of the game spreads out elemental resistances pretty well, elemental weaknesses are so rare that there isn't really much reason to keep many different elemental spells around. While many of the newer enemy types have some nice weaknesses, many of the existing enemies (especially espers and ameobas, even if they are starting to become less widespread) need to get some as well. For example, is there any good reason why the fire ameoba and the explosion esper shouldn't be weak to water?

There definitely needs to be more weaknesses. Most of the time, players just wind up using Air and Earth because they currently have the fewest resistances and most weaknesses. Fire is particularly sad, as I can't name a single enemy that's vulnerable to fire and Water is pretty bad because almost every single Ocean creature is near-immune to it. I'd like to see Lightning Espers be weak to Earth, Explosive Espers weak to water...you know, some logical weaknesses. |

Thanks! * A few of the existing elemental strengths/weaknesses of monsters have been tweaked around, and then an absolutely enormous number of additions have been made so that monsters that previously had only an elemental strength now also have an elemental weakness to a lesser degree. ** The idea is to further encourage use of different spell elements not just via the stick but also with the carrot. ** A lot of times the opposite spell elements are used (strong to red fire, then weak to blue water), but this isn't universally true depending on what feels thematically appropriate for the monster in question. |
