It's worth exploring. Might make some of the currently-crappy characters (Bronze Age...) be useful. |

I really like this idea, potentially gives a reason to play some of the other races |

Hrm. My concern with this one is that it could end up with characters from each Age playing the same, since they're going to want to play to the strengths of their bonuses. (That is, it'll have a much stronger effect than before.) It's more likely to shut down using other Ages (since then you also lose preferred spells) than encourage it beyond the initial curiosity phase.
I'm not sure how this can be altered to overcome this, to be honest. Maybe if you got 2 - 3 spells, each of which could only be used once per character lifetime, or having to pay a hefty refresh cost to get them back. That way they're more lifelines than a constant presence, and reflects each Age's way of surviving particularly harsh situations? (So, for instance, Bronze Age would likely get a combination of toughness, extra damage and big melee attacks, while Age Of Magic would get large AoE's, improved mana regen and such, and so on.) |

I reckon they'd want to be free spells, so you don't have an opportunity cost if you change to a different type of character, no? Probably mostly utility spells as well. The more glass cannon-y types, especially, could perhaps get a way to avoid damage interestingly. |

...the opportunity cost in changing to a different type of character is in losing the spells your old character got due to their Age, though. By making them single use (and freely available - the cost only kicks in if you use it and still want to use it again), it means that you aren't going to lose anything by changing (since the spells left remaining would be replaced by whichever new spells you choose, anyway), where as for free spells you'll lose the use of the free spells your last character had. |

Oh I mean more I'd be pretty reluctant to change types if I'd sunk a tier orb and some resources into a racial ability, but I'd be quite happy to switch as long as I got the race spell as soon as I started with a new type. Obvs if you love one of the special abilities to the exclusion of all others that won't make much difference, but I don't know that the game has to give you variety unless you want it. |

I think it makes sense to have it use tier orbs. This is like a race-specific unlock that lasts for one continent, since the next continent resets spells. It's a strategic decision to go for something like this. So it should use a tier orb + many different spell ingredients -- these are bonus spells, after all. They shouldn't be easy to obtain.
In any case, right now tier orbs limits are self-imposed, so they're not hard limits anyway. |
