Summary0007477: Flesh out characters a little with ancestor ghosts
DescriptionBased on Tom Chick's suggestion on the podcast, I think it would be nice if there was a way to differentiate and flesh out characters. Here's my idea:

- Together with the graves that would hopefully be in a settlement, you'd have statues for truly heroic heroes.
- A hero that survives for a long time gets a big statue. The longer you survive, the more heroic you are and the bigger statue you get.
- Once a hero dies, the statue gets a wreath on it or something like that.
- Eventually the statue disappears as people have forgotten about that hero. If you kill a whole bunch of characters quickly, there won't be another statue there.
- Why is this important? Because of the summon ancestor spell/scroll (not sure yet which it should be). It summons an earlier character -- the biggest statue currently in the settlement to help you out. How does this play out? Well, if you have no statue in the settlement ie. no recent heroic ancestor, nothing happens. If you have a minimal statue, you'd suddenly inhabit the body of the ghost character. This is helpful is you were about to die. As you get to bigger and bigger statue ghosts, the top ones will have super duper spells that only ghosts have.

- You might have to clear out the vengeful ghost of that player before you can summon them.

I like the statue idea, but I am not sure about the summon ancestor bit. Is it really an ancestor? I renamed my settlement residents to all be a family. Is it Summon Uncle then? Summon Second Cousin Once Removed? But semantics aside, summoning a previous character, or an incarnation of them, would make more sense if it was a long time later. Bringing back someone who recently died... I don't know. Something about that just screams WRONG to me.

Yeah I realize summon ancestor doesn't work as a name.

I think it makes sense to bring back someone who recently died. If the previous glyphbearer was legendary, then so long as he's remembered as an inspiration, he can briefly come to the rescue of the current glyphbearer.

This is just a temporary thing btw if I didn't mention it -- it's not that you switch to that old character, you just have 1-2 minutes as that old character. Just to save your butt when you need it. You could also just have that old character fighting alongside you, but that requires AI and probably wouldn't work well.

There are also considerations of how this would work in multiplayer.

I like this idea. Even if it just summons something like the vengeful ghosts to fight on your side that scales on the achievements of the recently deceased.

Maybe the statue can be made bigger by completing missions with a character, or even by killing the overlord. Just staying alive as being what determines the size of the statue could be easily exploited. staying alive isn't heroic, staying alive and making a difference is.
