Summary | 0007322: Replacement to Upgrade Stones
Description | I know I've tried this before, but I just hit on something. Right now, upgrade stones are just a formality. You collect a whole bunch of them, and then you upgrade each character. There are some choices to make, but they're not great choices. I think it might help to think of the character upgrades as something that the glyph has a budget of. This is the kind of dynamic that I think would really be interesting. The glyph recharges these upgrade stones over time: each mission gives you a few upgrade stones, and stashes also allow you to fill up your charge very slowly. The key is that the maximum number of upgrade stones is capped at a full upgrade. Once you have enough stones for a fully upgraded character, you can no longer get any more upgrade stones (the glyph charge is full). Using the 'charge' of upgrade stones upgrades the current character to whatever amount you choose. But the key is that you can choose to upgrade your character just a little bit, and then the next character will be able to use whatever upgrade remains right away. Or you can choose to upgrade the current character fully, and then the next character will start with no upgrade at all. In essence, you're choosing how much you want to gamble on this character with your 'upgrade charge'. If you really need a strong character right now, you can upgrade it fully. But you could lose all of that, and you'd have to build the charge up again by surviving a long time with that character (ie. missions and stashes -- this prevents spamming short-lived characters to get more charges). Or you could upgrade your character just a little, and then your next one could start with a higher upgrade (if that's what you want) and won't need to live too long to get to a full upgrade. This also requires that upgrades not be attached to specific characters, which just encourages maxing out their upgrades anyway. It's attached to the glyph, but the charge that was used is lost upon character death.

Sorry, I simply prefer the current way. I can't keep defending this in great depth and get anything else done. Not to be rude, there's just only so many hours in the day. |
