Summary0007308: Upgrade Stones benefit change might be a biiit too far...
DescriptionReloaded a game I started in beta today to find that my current glyphbearer no longer has enough mana to cast Creeping Death (had 400, down to 360), which I have been using as my entropy-based attack. She's upgraded 3/4/3 Hp/Attack/Mana so no more upgrades can be applied to her. :(

Is this benefit decay mechanic really necessary? I just don't see how it would be possible to cast any higher cost spells without using at least half your upgrade slots for mana capacity. Is this intentional?

If you're using Creeping Death as a primary it sounds more like you could have used an extra mana upgrade and one less attack. Also now that upgrading mana also is an increase to regen rate it is more desirable for a high cost build like Creeping Death.

As it stands now Creeping Death is currently a very heavy hitter. I would be using a character that started with a higher mana pool as well as a mana reduction enchant of at least 35% going. Projectile speed and cost reduction increase dps by raising the amount you can cast and hit a fast moving enemy. Raising the damage by 40-60% doesn't mean as much as getting the spell out twice as often and moving fast enough to reliably hit.

Bear in mind also that the amount of benefit you get from mana increases is based also on how much mana your character started with. There are characters that start with 400+ mana, and plenty that start over 300. With them, putting in just an upgrade or two yields much better results.

Fair enough points!

I managed to get the spell castable again by rearranging my enchants. I just want to point out I hope if more spells with higher costs are added, that I'm a bit worried this revised system might make them unfeasible or even unattainable for some characters or builds. But better if its by design than by mistake :D

Actually, that's a chief goal: I want to have some raistlin type characters that are weak in most respects but that use super-spells that nobody else can get to. I think that sort of variety is really interesting. Nothing in the game yet is what I'd class a super spell, though.

My first continent clear I was using Creeping Death as a primary and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love to see some *very* expensive mana cost spells that would require a glass cannon of sorts in order to fire it off properly. 5+ upgrades to mana on a character who already started off with a high amount.

With the recent change to upgrade stones I get the feeling even less people will be raising mana to higher tiers. I was guilty of only bumping up mana when the other two were too expensive to realistically raise before the .002 overhaul.

I like the upgrade stone change. It makes it feel like mana upgrades are now "worth it". I tried a test character with 10 mana upgrades, and they could keep a shield spell up indefinitely. ME GUSTA

I think rebalancing of some of the spell mana costs should be considered in light of the recent reduction of mana pool. Especially spells like Sunrise and its counterpart. I'd love to try some of these spells, but they require a ridiculous amount of mana to cast, even prior to the upgrade stone changes.

If I'm not mistaken Sunrise and Nightfall are right about the cost of Creeping Death. It's hardly an insurmountable task to get either a mana pool higher than 400, or much less even while utilizing mana cost enchants. As x4000 pointed out there are characters who start already at that point or easily attainable with a single upgrade or two.

Edit: On a second look they are 480, so that's a still a fair bit higher than Creeping death, but even with modest enchants (not even uncommon/rare) I managed to get the cost down to 269.
