Summary | 0007299: Persistant worlds and real world reboots
Description | While I realize the majority of worlds out there will probably be private servers, anyone hosting a free-for-all is going to need a way to maintain it while having a personal life. A few things really need to be included to allow for this to occur if private players are going to host multiplayer domains. 1) MP Servers should be introduced as windows services, to allow for background running in spite of the login choices. Startup options don't all run depending on user. 2) For those players who have single user auto-login setups, or aren't familiar enough with their system for serious hosting, they need to have a command line startup structure they can drop into the startup folder (preferably with idiot proof instructions) so that on startup, they bring the world back up when they reboot. The reason for this is a lot of people have things like auto-update for windows installed, blue screens that will happen, and other evilness that can occur to their systems (a child's "Puzzles with Elmo" taking down an MP server, for example) and reboots and the like occur. Hey, it's Windows! First troubleshooting step: REBOOT! The easier this is on server hosts/admins, the better for everyone.
