Summary0007211: Ideas for Schizophrenic wave types
DescriptionAs you may know, when the AI creates a schizophrenic wave, there is a chance that instead of the more or less even distribution like normal, it will instead focus on units with special attributes.

Right now, there are three such types (at least according to AIWaveType):
Bomber (where the AI places special emphasis on ships with >1 structural bonus)
Parasite (emphasis on ships which can deal reclamation damage)
Cloaking (emphasis on ships which have cloaking)

I am proposing a few new Schizophrenic wave types
Tractor (emphasis on ships with tractor beams)
Raider (emphasis on non-melee ships with immunity to forcefields)
Melee (emphasis on melee ships)

As always, the AI can only choose a "specialization" schizophrenic waves if they have at least one bonus ship type that meets the "filter" for what they want to emphasize on. (Like, if the AI has no melee units, it couldn't choose to send a melee wave)

Hmm, just thought of another one, but I can't think of a good name for it:

Stall breaker (emphasis on ships with tractor beam immunity OR gravity immunity, extra emphasis on ships with both)

Is this extra ships of in that filter or only ships of that filter? I am mostly opposed to the latter.

Extra emphasis on ships that match the filter.

Like, in a bomber wave, they may send a large number of bomber type ships, but they will still send other ships.
Like for bomber waves, thy will still send fighters and missile frigates, but just in a ratio like 5:1 instead of the more typical .8:1 (bombers get a slight penalty to numbers in AI waves)

Another idea

Artillery (emphasis on ships with > X range, for some yet to be determined X)
or alternatively
Artillery (dynamic emphasis on ships varying with range, with higher range meaning more emphasis)

Yet another idea

Anti-armor (emphasis on ships with armor piercing and armor rotting)

I like this idea a lot. For example, in the "Tractor Role", they units could specialize in picking your guys up and running off to allied planets...with Raid Engines :D

With the new in-code ship type to "role" mapping the is in place and used for special forces and the per planet "reinforcement preferences", that could aid implementing this (and also do it in a more flexible way)

Note, this is a distinct mechanic from the "sometimes send a mono-wave anyways" logic that is now in schizo waves. When these "wave types" trigger, they still get multiple ship types, but tend to "spend" more than usual on certain ship types.

Yet another idea.

Support wave (partial emphasis on support ships (shield bearers, ammunition boosters, etc). Unlike the other types, they would only get a moderatley higher than normal ratio of these, rather than a dominating ratio like most of the other types)

And with that, this brings yet one more idea to help "tie" all this together. (Inspired partially by the discussion about Schizo waves at www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,11906.0.html)

Being able to select multiple "types"/specializations for a schizo wave. So instead of being only restricted to 0 specializations (the normal schizo logic), or 1 (the normal schizo bomber wave or cloaker wave or whatever), it could mix and match several of them (up to 3 or 4).
This could lead to lots of nifty combinations. Like support + bomber, or long range + gravity and/or tractor immune + FF immune stuff, or parasite + tractor, or engine-damagers + tractors + melee ships. This could lead to some actually pretty scary schizo "loadouts" more frequently, as the AI would actually try to build to "roles" rather than be all over the place, rather ineffectually on average.
