Summary0006901: Ship selection in distant systems.
DescriptionI was reading issue 0006338: Ships in multiple systems and while I agree that multiple ship select over multiple systems would present a lot of annoying problems, I have a similar, more narrow request.

It would be very helpful if players could maintain a group selection in one system and give orders to be preformed in another. Let me present this generic use case that happens over and over for every AI war game I play.

Goal: Move fleet from system A to system B. Kill certain thing in system B. Return to system A.

As the game is now, this involves the following drawn out steps:

1. Move all ships next to wormhole.
2. Wait for ships to stack up next to wormhole.
3. Move all ships through wormhole.
4. Wait for all ships to reach other side.
5. Queue orders of targets to be destroyed, then an order to leave system.

If we were able to select units and give them orders inside another system, this could be reduced to a single effortless step of:

1. Select units. Change view to next system and queue orders.

This would also be useful in a number of other cases, such as units that need to be moved to a certain area in another system to get repaired, or an Engineer group that you want to transfer to a new system and immediately begin work on repairing a Golem.

So long as only orders across systems are allowed and not selection of multiple ships, I see no reason for this to become overly complex or annoying. As soon as a player would select a ship in a new system all previously selected ships would be dropped from the current selection.

There would need to be a way to toggle between this behavior or the current behavior (which is each planet remembers its selections), as many people abuse the current behavior as well.

It could be a global option (either control option or a settings option) with a keyboard key, that when held down, suppresses it when changing planets. When the global option is unchecked, the key does the opposite.
This way, regardless of how you set the default behavior, you can quickly switch between the based on what you are planning to do with your units next. Sort of like how group move and the group move toggle key (G by default) works.

How about integrating it with the shift key (or whatever is bound to queue up orders)? If a player is holding it down and clicks on a new system then they probably want to give orders to their previous selection to be performed in the system. Otherwise, use the current method.
