Summary | 0006868: Make Ship Design Hacker like survey ship instead of like a repair platform.
Description | One problem with the 10-minute recharge for the SDH is that you can't actually get close to it to defend it. Since it needs to sit still to complete the hack, if you move a blob of ships over it, it moves to get out of the way, resetting the timer. (I've had this happen at 1:30 left on the timer before, which is pretty ridiculous.) I propose that, since the response only happens when the ship is actually hacking, at this point, that the ship also use the same sort of running timer as the survey ship for the Spire campaign. This way, accidentally moving the ship won't cause problems. On the other hand, there are plenty of lore justifications someone could make up for why it needs to sit still... It certainly makes the whole thing a bit more of a challenge, sometimes. :p

You could also give both the ship design hacker and the knowledge hacker a higher "don't push me" priority, so normal ships won't push them out of the way. This same sort of oversight hit both fortresses and mobile repair stations when their "stand still timeout" mechanic was introduced, and these had similar fixes. However, as thematically the hackers are closer to the survey ship rather than the MRS in terms of what they do, I can see why removing the "reset on move" of the countdown would be desirable. |

I could definitely live with giving the hacker the Fortress/MRS low push priority. That would solve the thing I'm complaining about, and I somehow hadn't realized that was in there. The survey idea was from looking at the survey ship's behavior and just thinking, "You know, *this* would solve the problem I had." |
