Summary0006551: Default bindings for mouse are less-than useful
DescriptionWhile using the WASD controls to move, the only ability keys I can press while still being able to move (without lifting my hand too much) are [1] [2] and [3]. Interestingly enough, these three action bar slots are also bound to [mouse1] [mouse2] and [mouse3].

It just seems odd to me that the easiest keys to hit (low numbers) are also bound to mouse, making them redundant. If you're using the default keymapping, why would you ever press key [1] or [2] when you can just left or right click?

I can't think of a technically simple way to implement a more effective solution, however.

For reference, my personal current keybindings are default except I unbound "Use Mouse Ability" 1 through 3 and set "Use Mouse ability" 8, 9 & 0 to be left, right, and middle click, respectively. This way, the last three abilities in my action bar are my mouse slots. I would never reach all the way over on my keyboard to press [8] [9] or [0] in a hectic situation otherwise.

I need to remove the ability to rebind the mouse abilities; that's the absolute wrong way to go about it, and leads to bugs. Instead you want to move the mouse bindings over some, which I think is f2. I forget exactly what. There are several good control options, including movement directed aiming, which you might want to look into.

Another opportunity for me to evangelize for the movement-directed aiming. Moving with WASD while firing off spells with the numpad keys is probably the easiest setup, and you don't really lose much by not aiming with the mouse.

x4000, I believe the command in the edit controls menu that you are referring to is called "Switch Highlighted Ability Slot To Next/Previous". If that is the option you are talking about, the issue with that is that it moves the keyboard bindings over too.

In other words, if I press key 1, it fires off spell 1. I shift the highlighted ability over one slot, then I press key 1, and it fires off spell 2.

I agree that rebinding the mouse is confusing. The reason I did in the first place was because the Switch Highlighted Ability action moves the keyboard bindings too, so it isn't useful at all having anything other than ability 1 selected, as far as having the numbers correspond to the abilities they activate.

Should I bug instead the fact that the shifting the currently highlighted ability shifts the keyboard hotkeys as well?

That's the one -- and we need to take out the mouse bindings as well as fix that from shifting the keyboard bindings over, thanks for letting us know about that.

It's interesting to note how little interest there is in changing the way the default mouse and keyboard bindings are handled despite this being the first real issue I had when I tried out the demo last night.

After experimenting for a bit, I've settled on changing the numeric bindings to correspond to the 11-20 taskbar instead of the initial 1-10 one as being a decent workaround for the time being.

This is assuming that I'm understanding the mouse bindings correctly in that they're impossible to change as they're hardcoded to the first several slots.

The thing with the mouse bindings getting moved over at the same time as the keyboard bindings was fixed a while back.

"This is assuming that I'm understanding the mouse bindings correctly in that they're impossible to change as they're hardcoded to the first several slots."

All you have to do is bind the "Switch L-Click Ability Slot To Next" to some key, then press that key until you're happy with the position of the mouse buttons. So if you wan l-click to correspond to slot 5 or slot 9 for that matter, you can.

Cheers!

I set my 1, 2 and 3 keys to use the spells in the 5, 6, and 7 slots, because I can just use the mouse for the first three.

I just use my mousewheel to change my active mouse slots, solves a lot of problems.
