Summary | 0006535: The dark grouch and the clockwork cleaner
Description | These two enemies work on a similar principle, they don't like what the player is doing to the place. The dark grouch hates light. He only appears in dark areas and launches creeping death-style attacks that also hit the background at anything that emits light. If everything is dark the grouch is passive but any balls of light, inner light enchants, etc make him angry. He only attacks light sources, players only get targeted if they use an inner light enchant. Of course that doesn't mean he'll try to avoid those other players. When dealing with the grouch you can't use light too liberally if you don't want to get swamped with dangerous projectiles. The clockwork cleaner on the other hand hates littering. It will aggressively destroy any objects a player deploys, including wooden platforms. The cleaner uses melee attacks for that purpose, it doesn't chase the player but of course needs to be avoided. Both of these should be fairly tough so they can't simply be shot dead on sight.

Those are so awesomely clever. :) |

Seriously -- excellent ideas. Along the same lines, I'd like to suggest the Gravity Gnome. He's very short and hard to notice, and he doesn't attack the player directly. However, he doesn't like things jumping up above him (sometimes way above). So he activates a gravity increase field around himself, which is a chunk of the screen from top to bottom that glows purple (in my mind) and causes gravity to increase by 2x, 3x, 4x or more. The field is only in effect for a couple of seconds before turning off, but it can be extremely lethal (or just annoying if you're at the lowest platforming difficulty). The Mover (tentative name) can use walnuts and other small objects of his creation to throw at you, but becomes much more dangerous once he has some bigger background objects to fling at you with his telekinesis. In the caves he becomes REALLY dangerous because there are so many objects, many of which are toxic. Not to mention the skelebot junkyards with their explosive barrels. |

Those are also really cool, Bluddy -- more technically complex, though. I'd suggest moving them to their own thread, because I think due to complexity those need to be post-1.0. Throwing background objects (or even having them move at all) would be a major feat at the moment, and having large beams of anything isn't something that the engine currently supports (though we do plan to add that for other features, so this would fit naturally when we get to that). |
