Summary0006269: Shopping List
DescriptionThis was KDR_11k's idea but I feel strongly enough about it that I'm chucking it in Mantis ASAP!

KDR_11k
"...a kind of shopping list, you tag spells as 'I want to make that' and the list shows you the ingredients you need to make the tagged spells. That would be much quicker to check than the several layers of the crafting grimoire."

zebramatt:
"I like this idea a lot. And to steal directly from one of my other favourite games, perhaps if you pick up an ingredient for something on your list, the game could make a sound. That way, you can chuck half a dozen different spells on there and even if you forget about one of them several play sessions later, the game lets you know with an audio cue that you've collected something towards one."

I like this.

Sort of like a favourites list for spells you're working on currently.

Which can brought up using a hotkey.

Now that we are out of beta, do we have time to implement this?

That's a brilliant idea! Link to discussion thread:

This would be spectacular.

It could be extended beyond spellgems to other unlockables, too...

As a brand new player, this would be a HUGE help.

Thanks!

* When you're looking at spells in the Big Honkin' Encyclopedia, there is now an "Add To Loot Goals" button whenever you click into the details for a spell.
** By adding spells to your Loot Goals, they will show up in a little sidebar whenever the escape menu is being shown. On your main loot goals listing you can then quickly see a list of all the remaining components you need to find in order to craft the spells you were interested in.
** This can save you valuable time in opening up the Big Honkin' Encyclopedia, as well as give you a constant reminder of the goals that you set for yourself. Hovering over items in your Loot Goals list shows you lots of information such as where to find the needed loot.

* When looking at supply-type enchants in the Where To Find Stuff You Want or Big Honkin' Encyclopedia, there is now an "Add To Loot Goals" button whenever you click into the details for an enchant.
** By adding supply-style enchants to your Loot Goals, they will show up in a little sidebar whenever the escape menu is being shown. On your main loot goals listing this will show the enchant in question until you acquire it.
** This can save you valuable time in opening up the Where To Find Stuff You Want section, as well as give you a constant reminder of the goals that you set for yourself. Hovering over items in your Loot Goals list shows you lots of information such as where to find the supplies.

* When looking at general supplies in the Where To Find Stuff You Want or Big Honkin' Encyclopedia, there is now a slider that lets you choose how many of that type of item you want to have on hand, ranging from 1 to 9999.
** Using this slider, you can set for yourself how many of this kind of supply item you wish to have in your inventory. Whenever your supplies fall below this value, your Loot Goals list will remind you to get more.
** This can save you valuable time in opening up the Where To Find Stuff You Want section, as well as give you a constant reminder of the goals that you set for yourself. Hovering over items in your Loot Goals list shows you lots of information such as where to find the supplies.

* Once you have added stuff to your shopping list, you can see the details simply by hitting the Escape key to bring up the escape menu. We don't have it showing all the time in your HUD because frankly that would just be clutter and it's only a keypress away anyhow, now.

This is awesome I love this, it will be very nice not having to use the BHE as much :)

Not to be a whiner here, but "Options are good". Maybe a tickbox to keep the shopping list on screen? I will add this as another Mantis issue once I've tested the list in practice. It might not be feasible to have it all the time.

Options are good... to a point. If we had 10,000 options in the settings menu, that would be bad because nobody could ever find what they wanted.

So there's certainly a balance to be had. Rather than just trying to do every possible permutation of possible options, I try to go for the ones that really seem needed. I just can't fathom why you'd want a giant thing on the side of your screen all the time when the escape key (or menu key on your gamepad) is right there?

More to the point, it would block your view of some important things and get in the way of your spellcasting on the right side of the screen. It would also literally cover up your character at the right edge of the screen sometimes; we account for that with the top and bottom of the screen, but not with the sides because we don't put anything there.

Not to say that it's impossible, but it's really kind of a hassle and I just don't understand what the use case is that even makes it desirable. Isn't there more interesting stuff to work on instead? Remember that every change that we make costs you, personally, something: because we did X we didn't have time to do Y. When it comes to "options are good" sort of suggestions, just make sure you bear that in mind. If it really IS that important to you, then okay; that's a different matter. But if it's an idle mild preference...

Then again on the topic of blocking things with the UI, it already blocks things in the lower left corner pretty often. Almost missed a few enchantment containers due to it, thankfully they show up on the map though.

I'd say I'm neutral to it being an option, I can see its uses, and also the disadvantages.

The blocking in the lower left is supposed to never happen; that was something I thought I'd fixed shortly before 1.0, but it seems to be happening sometimes still. Once that's fixed then what I said above will be true again. :)
