Summary0004436: Circle of fire - bit too tricky to use
DescriptionThe range you have to keep enemies at to use this spell effectively is a little bit tricky to maintain. If the flames spawned just a little bit closer to you, it'd be a far more useful spell. (Hopefully without being overpowered!)

I think it would be better if the effect spread out from you so that you don't have to worry about getting the distance just right.

as an additional point this would also help with some of the weirdness i have seen with circle of fire still being damaging, whilst not through walls, round corners

I think if we change it enough, we can make all spells the same. ;)

Ice cross and circle of fire are two examples of shaped spells, which will be but one tool in your toolkit, having specific uses and drawbacks. This one can hit many enemies easily, but only if they are at the right range.

I'm not suggesting we homogenise it with ice cross, just make the circle a tiny bit smaller.

The only use I've found at the moment for this spell, in any real combat sense, is getting enemies trapped under platforms and cheesing them from the other side.

Which is a tactic, sure, but not a particularly satisfying one.

I make pretty heavy use of this spell when fighting the giant dark bats (or whatever they are) that serve as minibosses in many caves. They tend to spawn in pairs, and it's quite easy to get them both to follow the player as the same range. The you can just hammer them with circle of fire while running around, and really wear down their health.

Actually, for me the most useful aspect of circle of fire is the large radius. It seems to do high damage as a tradeoff for its odd shape, and I find that it works pretty well as a melee-but-not spell, letting you do high damage to enemies without having to be quite as close to them as you would for a melee-range spell.

Yes, our goal is to provide a huge variety of tools -- some players will gravitate more toward some than others.
