Summary0004249: Make the Giant Shadow Bat boss fight more tactical
DescriptionFrom what I can tell, right now these bats sort of fly around for a while, and then eventually home in on you and fly straight at you, not stopping until they've hit you. With the recent speed changes, this makes them a pain and not very fun to fight, even if I outlevel them by a fair bit (previously kiting them was easy, but now it's a real pain).

I suggest giving these bats a sort of "attack run" style behavior, where they fly straight at/toward/through you and adjust their angle by some amount as you move around, but if you get too far out of their flight path they abandon their attack and just move away out of sight and come around for another pass. (Think dodging a homing missile!) I hope that makes at least some sense! This would make the fight a lot more interesting then just kiting them all day, since you have a chance to attack them as they're moving toward/away from you, etc, and you can actually dodge the attack.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. Though it makes me wonder if "teleport" might be a possible way to fight them. It's near impossible to kite them anymore, and it was pretty difficult in the past.

And the actual changes to them made me die once for them... but still, I find them somewhat easy, despite sometimes fighting in regions of the same level.

Making boss fights more tactical and more difficult is definitely in the works.

tigersfan: I figured that was probably the case :) - this is just making these guys a real pain at the moment, since they're so darned difficult to kite now, always right on your tail. Need to mix up my spell selection to kill them faster!

Good call on the teleport! I hadn't thought of that. Now I just need to find a plum...

I definately vote for improvements in this area two just slaughtered me. I was too busy concentrating on one and the other came from behind. Maybe only one at a time would help.

Since 0.509, the shadowbat fights have become very easy if you get your positioning right.

The bats don't seem to have been told that they can't fly through walls anymore, so they tend to get stuck under overhangs a lot. This means you can pick a nearby spot with a good angle and throw pebbles at them while they try to fly directly at you through a piece of landscape instead of just going around it.

Yup, popped in while playing as I thought "this can't be right" when I repeatedly got bats stuck in crannies then just stood over them and ice crossed them through the floor. Perhaps if it hit a wall collision it could reverse course for a bit, which would help it get out of most overhangs.

I think this is a case of the AI behaviour still being designed around flying through walls, which isn't possible anymore. They just need to be tweaked to notice that the walls are there and move accordingly.

Also, ice cross doesn't go through floors no more.

Hm in my game ice cross is still floor/ wall penetrating on 0.510 -- perhaps that's a different issue then.

But overall I like bats being more strategic, its always finding that line between planning out a tactic and just trapping a boss in a corner which feels a bit like cheating.
