Summary0004238: Chunk mini map - sizing issues
DescriptionPresently the chunk mini map can be two sizes: regular and larger.

For me, larger is absolutely enormous in any outdoors area, though perfectly usable indoors. Regular is fine for chunks with a low vertical footprint but occupies a quarter of the screen for tall chunks.

I can scale the regular size down to compensate but although it's still usable in that state outside, it then becomes too small to see indoors. Which means I have to constantly flick between (a scaled-down) regular outdoors and the larger indoors. And that's without bringing larger indoors rooms into the equation!

A couple of solutions come to mind:
[1A] Make three standard sizes for the chunk mini map - small, regular and large.
[1B] Provide scalability for each size.

[2] Automatically scale regular size (within its scale, as it were) to always try to maintain a similar sort of screen footprint.

[3] Disassociate larger and smaller chunk maps from one another and allow a scale setting for the two (or three) different standard sizes.

There could probably be some improvement here, but, maybe not right now.

It's actually hurting my game a fair bit - I spent 90% of the time I'm underground, for example, with the larger version of the minimap occupying almost my entire viewpoint, because I want to be able to see the little coloured blips but it's too small the size I've got it scaled down to - which I HAVE to have it scaled down to, or the big vertical areas make it nigh impossible to see the left side of the screen.

I actually had to remap the M key to sit right next to my finger (caps lock) and it's one of my most frequently used keys...

I don't really follow this line of logic -- if you need to see the little blips on the minimap, and that has to be a certain scale, then regardless of the total size of the minimap you need it at that scale to see it. If it's large enough for you to see underground, then in interiors it's also large enough to see despite the fact that it's way smaller in the corner. Right?

On the flip side, if it's too small for you to see in interiors, then it's too small to see in the underground, given that it's all the same scale. So you'd be using the map key a fair bit anyhow, to scale up undergrounds and look at them.

Are you saying that, in essence, you want to be able to read interior minimaps since they will fit in the amount of area you want to cover, whereas you want to NOT be able to read larger chunks because to do so takes up too much space on the screen?

I think he's happy with less detail on the outdoor maps, since they tend to be much more open spaces with fewer things to look at and less stuff close to other stuff on the minimap. The indoor areas are generally smaller and have quite a lot packed into them, so a larger view is necessary.

I mean, I could add clamps for the max width or height of the minimap, I guess.

I'd rather have a less useful minimap occasionally than have it obscure large chunks of the screen. I can always expand it if necessary. That said, I haven't really had any problems with the minimap myself, so I don't have a personal investment either way.

Yes, what Jerith said.

Okay, fair enough. I imagine something can be worked out there.

I'm conscious that there's a lot of (my) rambling up there to get to a point so, in short:

[1]I like a big map in all but the large, maze-like rooms.

[2]A medium sized map in maze-rooms and underground would be good.

[3]A little map outdoors is fine for 90% of the time.

--> Presently [3] means I've scaled my default map down, meaning I have to have it in massive view to fulfill [1], and there's no elegant way for me to fulfill [2].

Oh and, just having an option to hide the chunk minimap (for the maze and outdoors areas) would probably knock this one on the head for me.

* The way that the minimap scaling works is now completely different.
** Previously there was a scale slider, but that is now gone.
** Now there are a pair of percentages that you can set between 0 and 100 for both the width and height.
*** The default is 20%x15%. This means that the minimap is, by default, able to cover 20% of the width of your screen at most, and 15% of the height of your screen at most.
*** The nice thing about this is that it makes sense on any screen size, and automatically scales as you shift your screen size.

* The minimap used to have only two states: normal and fullscreen. Now it has four states: Normal, 2x, fullscreen, and off.
** You can easily switch between these with the M key, which makes turning off the minimap during a boss battle fairly straightforward, and it makes having a double-sized map temporarily for exploration something that is a lot more feasible on larger monitors in particular.

Marvelous! See? Whining - even in a half-hearted and jovial fashion - will get you everywhere.
