Summary | 0004181: Making the main screen camera have varied zoom levels
Description | I think some people would like to have their screens more zoomed out or zoomed in, as sometimes the default scale don't allow you to see as much as you wanted. Making it a parameter in the options or a hotkey could be some good ideas.

Hmmm, I'm not sure how easy this would be. But, I'll mark it for consideration. |
The performance impact from this would almost definitely make this technically infeasible. But there's a slim chance we could do something with that. |
I believe in the outdoors it really could, giving that my 8400 is running with the lowest cloud complexity and a layer off, but in large indoors this wouldn't impact the framerate a lot, imo. |
Actually, longer-term, in indoors it would be even worse (minus the clouds bit). There's a lot of detailing on the interiors, for the big maze rooms and such. At any rate it's a technically challenging thing that would take a goodly bit of time, and which would have a very uncertain payoff. It's not just a matter of scaling the viewport, you also have to get mouse handling to adjust to the zoom, and monster names/healthbars are drawn in such a way that they would be impossible to scale at the moment (but not forever), and so on. |
This would probably even be quite a beneficial feature if the difference in zoom level was relatively small: 10% either way or something. I imagine that would make it marginally easier to do, since you'd scarcely have to worry about re-scaling monster names and health bars and that. |
This sounds like too much work and complexity for too little reward to me. |
Agreed with the "too much work for too little payoff" sentiment. Besides, wouldn't this affect balancing, re: monsters? The odious Skelebot Dwarfs, to take one example, would be a lot less threatening if I had two seconds' warning of running into one than the much shorter warning I get now (assuming we're running at each other). |
Regarding balancing, sure that is somewhat of a concern -- though, that said, if you play on a larger screen than me, you already have that advantage over me since you can see further. |
From that point of view, I finally get why people were so annoyed at the dwarfs. I play at 2560x1600, so I always had a fair bit of warning. :o |
Field of view is sadly one of my biggest bugbears with this game at the moment. |
What resolution are you at, zebramatt? I mean, there's not much I can do about that in the short term if at all, but I'm curious what level you're at that you find unpleasant. |
I mostly play around 1100x700. Windowed, obviously. |
Although very technically challenging, I would like to mention a little bit about this, if I play at the native resolution for my monitor Fullscreen 1680x1050 for any interested, the screen elements are really quite small, I've found myself dropping the resolution size just to see the nicer detailing and make the graphics larger - but it causes a problem with the maps, the chunk map at the top can really obscure the whole playing field depending on how big the room you are exploring is and this can affect anyone who may have to play at those resolutions. Maybe a different issue? |
You can actually choose the size of the map in the settings screen, to offset that one issue. |
And I'm still campaigning to be able to hide the chunk map and message log with hotkeys or similar! Poor, dejected, low resolution zebra :-( (;-D) http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=4238 http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=4541 |
Please just give us time! There's a lot on the plate right now. |
Sorry, I was kidding! I've added a second emoticon for clarity. :-) |
Gotcha. ;) |
