Summary0003996: Dynamic skies scrambled on MacBook Pro
DescriptionDynamic skies are pink and scrambled on my 2011 MacBook Pro 13". It has Intel HD graphics, which I understand supports shader model 4.0. The tooltip for the setting suggests that it would be automatically enabled if shader 3.0 weren't supported on my hardware. It was not turned on initially. I had to manually enable it to get the static skies.

This certainly sounds like the game doesn't like something about your card, but I don't have a MAC of my own for comparison.

Yeah, the pink sky is definitely meaning that they dynamic skies are simply unable to execute on your card. Maybe there's some other Unisky requirement other than just SM3.0; I'll have to look at it.

Regardless, it's clear you'll have to use Static Skies on that machine either way; I'll just have to figure out a way to get it default to that on your machine.

Interestingly, on my 15" 2010 MacBook Pro, it's drawing the skies just fine. So it may actually be some sort of driver issue in your case, unless there's that much of a difference between our respective laptops.

It has an Intel HD Graphics 3000 video card. I just installed Lion on it this weekend. I don't suppose that could have anything to do with it?

Sometimes new OSes have old versions of drivers. Have you updated yours?

It could be a Lion issue, I'm not sure. The latest versions of Unity (the engine that AVWW runs on) improve Lion integration, but they also include some wicked sound bugs that lead to frequent crashes. So for now we're still on Unity 3.3, waiting for them to fix the crash bugs before upgrading to the latest. In that light, it might very well be a Lion thing, anyhow.

I just doubled checked. The update program says there are none. As far as I know, that's the only way to get drivers on a Mac.

I have Windows 7 x64 installed with bootcamp. I'll try it there just to eliminate the OS.

Wow, thanks for the extra mile on the testing -- you don't really have to do that, but it's certainly appreciated! I don't yet have Lion.

Dynamic skies work fine in Windows 7 x64 on the same hardware, so the issue must be caused by something else. Lion, possibly.

I'm an IT technician by choice and passion, so troubleshooting is in my blood. I just can't help myself.

The skies are awesome, BTW.

Yep, likely a Lion/Unity issue then.

Glad you like the skies!

Chris, I'll leave this open so it can be looked at when Unity gets their act together.

You can be the Lion guinea pig. :)

Why did you go to Lion anyway??

I like being the guinea pig. :)

As for Lion, I was just curious about the hype. I'm not really a Mac person. This one was given to me by my workplace to experiment with. Some of our users are Mac people, and I'm required to support them. A few have already made the jump to Lion, so I kinda needed to as well.

Besides, I like being the guinea pig. :)

It seems to be working well, now. No more pink dynamic skies!
