One possibility:

1. M = maximize
2. M again = set transparency to 50% (or whatever)
3. M again = minimize

Added support for this, rather than start another issue thread. Could really help in areas like The Deep, where the vertical nature of the levels can sometimes obscure a decent bit of my screen with the resolution I'm using, while letting me use the minimap normally for other chunks.

I'm actually more in favour of being able to hide it altogether temporarily, but transparency is nice also.

Similar (or perhaps identical) to what Admiral suggested, I envision pressing M doing the following for the map:

0. small (initial state)
1. small + transparent
2. medium
3. medium + transparent
4. big
5. big + transparent
6. GOTO 0

(Just adding a transparent state in between each size change.)
