Summary0003884: Discussion: Crippled Dragons
DescriptionSo, the new dragons are kinda annoying, however I noticed a few things:

Their firebreath seems to go through crates. In one of the boss rooms (one of the ones that are a big room with crates, forming a sort of large H) it channels under the door corridor, and spits fire through the entire set of crates at you. Not really sure what the mechanics are supposed to do here, and I should probably draw up some diagrams/test more thoroughly so I understand what is happening..

Their breath is annoying, in that it blocks your shots. You cant really kill them easily without destroying all the fire in the way, which gives them a LOT more effective hitpoints than they actually have. I assume this becomes more pronounced as levels get higher (not sure how their fire's hp scales with level, but even if each one only blocks one shot, itll take forever..)

They would be absolutely devastating if they could fly at least, so thats a bonus!

They're meant to be a step up from the others, for sure.

In terms of the fire breath, it should not be passing through boxes -- if it does, that's a bug, but I haven't seen it. However, it SHOULD be eating the boxes and eventually coming through the space where they once were.

Hitting the dragon actually doesn't require you to kill all the fire, it just requires piercing spells. Something like energy pulse or creeping death works much better against the dragon than something like fireball. It's also helpful if you can lead the fireballs on a merry chase and then drop down behind them -- wooden platforms to create your own passage, or judicious use of ride the lightning, can mean you can literally take this guy out without taking a single hit from him. Granted that's hard to do, but... yeah.

And anyway, the no-flying thing really was a kindness I felt was needed. ;) Later there will be other stuff that flies, but this guy really needed to walk around crippled, heh.

Yeah.. flying amoebas are certainly annoying enough.

Its not even as much the fire going through boxes, its more the fire spawning on the other side of boxes. Like somehow how orb of light (far better than emit light, btw, despite one being a scroll..) goes randomly(ish) around you if it cant place directly where you are

I guess I could be using a piercing spell, but you really dont get access to many of those early on - you need to know you need to take energy pulse/creeping death early, else youre just screwed if you dont

I would have kited the fire more, but it just seems kinda silly. It seems from my standpoint 'safer' to take down all of the firebreath so it cant actually hurt me, youknow? Better to get rid of it when its all lined up in front of me where I know I can kill it faster than it can advance. And some boss rooms just arent conducive to that at all.. Sure, if all the boss rooms were nice large empty rooms, itd be too easy (I do really like most of the boss rooms now though)

Oh, yeah -- the fire spawning on the other side of boxes is based on another issue I have here, related to there needing to be a magic spawn point that currently does not exist on monsters. When that's resolved, so will this be.

For the piercing spells, that's not really that much screwed if you don't have them -- it's a harder fight, but I've actually done it without it. And something like even the launch rock would do it, too. If you don't have it, and decide you want it, all you have to do is go get a gem of the appropriate type, and then possibly something like a walnut depending on which one you get. Walnuts are (as of late) now easy to find, and raw gems are something to be gotten routinely, anyhow.

Yeah, it makes sense on kiting the fire, too -- I like how the environment can really change the feel of the boss battles. It's also one of those things where the player simply needs more tools, too, which are coming! The fire dies out every 20 seconds, by the way (which is also the rate at which the dragon recharges his breath), so there is a reprieve if you can get it far enough away to where you can then get the dragon in peace.

I'm not saying your comments aren't valid, but having a wide variety of enemies that require specific types of spell counters is going to be a major thing. Some stuff will be immune or very resistant to fire spells, for instance, or will have a special weakness to water while otherwise being really tough. Etc, etc. To that end I think that meeting some big foe, and either dying or retreating and then crafting something more appropriate to the foe if you don't already happen to have something for it, is a major part of the game. And the more you do that, then the less often you're arriving completely unprepared based on not having some class of spell -- piercing, or some element, or whatever. Not generally getting down to the specific spell, of course.

Oh, and the next version is out; and with that I'm off for the night. Later!

I'll go look for a dragon to kill me later, but in the meantime, I only have one thing to comment on: "far better than emit light, btw, despite one being a scroll.."

Lights are for wimps. I still save my mana/crafting ingredients and run around in the dark. It's not nearly dark enough that I can't tell where I'm going, so I haven't found a compelling reason to waste limited resources on what usually just amounts to making a cosmetic difference. Even in the dimmest interior I've found so far, I was able to accurately punch bats in the face with no light source. Heh.

Yeah, as I stated this is more a discussion thread than a real 'issue' that needs fixing (I wouldve posted it on the forum, but there seems to be a lack of proper subforum for it!)

It seems that yeah, I am mainly doing it wrong - If I had energy pulse at the time, I probably couldve been dealing damage while clearing out the fire.

Lights are for wimps.

yeah. I used to think that.. But nowadays I just spam light orb everywhere. As much as it wastes my mana, it goes to this - Do you really WANT to be straining to do xyz based on min/maxing ingame? Honestly, my answer is not really. I see no reason to fight in the dark when I dont have to.

On that note, I have also been known to liberally cast lightningdoublejump and fireball despite not needing to use either of them. I think I also used ice cross to blow up a few trees too. I just really dont see mana as that limited a resource..

"I just really dont see mana as that limited a resource.."

It really isn't. I'm not sure why I hoard it so much, because I almost never run out of it, and I have dozens and dozens of mana potions that I rarely even use one of. I can't help recoiling when I see the big, giant numbers next to some spells that I can survive just fine without, though, and even worse, scrolls that I'd need to go hunt for more crafting materials to make more of if I get in the habit of using them. And so I run around in the dark, with 30 health potions and 60 mana potions and probably a dozen of each gem dust, and the numbers keep slowly growing over time. Heh.

FYI -- as of 0.418, you won't be seeing crippled dragons until level 12, so that's a lot more time to build up a wide library of spells before having to deal with them.

By not seeing them until level 12, does that mean that once you hit civ level 12 you'll start seeing them or will you only see them if they are level 12 or higher? Because, I ran into a level 1 crippled dragon in a level 1 rare commodity tower.

Either of those cases should trigger them.

"Because, I ran into a level 1 crippled dragon in a level 1 rare commodity tower."

That is DEFINITELY a bug unless you'd already been into that tower in a version prior to 0.418

Hmm, I can't remember but I think I may have already visited that tower because I was clearing out some towers I had already cleared a few floors of. If I see it again in a non visited tower I'll post it.

How about a level 1 dragon as the miniboss for a resource guarding party?

I think that can happen, not sure.

It most definitely happens with the resource guards. Had one right next to the starting settlement in one of my worlds.

Yeah, the resource guards are definitely valid for that.
