Summary | 0000319: "Beginner Mode"
Description | This would be a toggle in the game lobby. Could be force disabled if one or both of the AI levels are greater than 3. In Galaxy view: "Beginner Mode Map Reveal" Banner in a corner of the map to remind player of special beginner mode. AI home planets revealed at start All bonus specials revealed at start (ARS, co-processors, lvl 4 builders, Dyson sphere, Golems, etc.) Could even reveal the entire map as an alternative to a partial reveal. This could be an excelent way for new players to see and learn about all the goodies hidden on a map. Would also work in multiplayer to allow veteran players to teach new players quickly, or a team of new players to learn together.

This sounds like the 'Complete Visability' fog-of-war options that is already in the game. Can you take a look at that and see if that's what you are talking about? |
yep, slaps head and wishes could delete post like in the forums. only possible saving grace to this post would be a beginner mode toggle in the game lobby which when selected would present a list of recommended beginner settings or automaticaly set several things up for a beginner, like complete visability +100% res, and easier AI opponents. |
*shrug* its a matter of preference at that point - I take no pleasure in winning a game where I was hand-held the entire time.. and well, that toggle sounds a lot like hand-holding :\ No scouting, no visibility problems, magical extra resources? (not to mention boring.. er.. easier AI types.) |
Lancefighter you are and advanced/expert player who has been a member of the forums for almost a year and enslaved the Dyson Gatlings as well. The beginner toggle recommendation list would be a recommendation to be used or not at the players discretion. AI wars has so much depth it is easy to miss useful bits (like my not knowing/remembering the "complete Visability" setting). Easier AI types, AI levels 1-6, support a less painfull, more sucessful, learning curve. A beginner recommendation list/toggle would just be another way to raise awareness of the possible settings available when setting up a game. |
The danger with these settings is that people will play the game and go "lol boring" since they beat it so easily. That in spite of the game showing a bright neon sign "YOU ARE PLAYING NOOBMODE, DORKY!!" at them. I personally think this would be more detrimental to the game than add something positive, I'm afraid :( |
np, good discussion, as I said above if I could have removed the original post like in the forums I would have :) |
