Summary0003014: Apparently no way to instruct Artillery golem to attack target, but not advance on it
DescriptionI typically want to bring in an artillery golem to hammer away at a strong shield while my forces deal with guardians and ships. Unfortunately, once the golem is instructed to attack a structure, it advances on it.

Repro:
1) Move artillery golemn into an enemy system with a shield
2) Target the shield with the golem

Expected:
1) Golem has large range, so no need to advance on the target

Actual:
2) Golem begins to move towards the target

This is a problem with ALL units; any unit will start moving towards its target a bit when given an explicit attack order, even if that units is well within its range already. It is just most noticeable with very long range units.

If this was a shield guard post then it would have radar dampening, so that would explain the movement, if it was moving a long way towards it. (However in 5.003 Artillery golems will ignore this, so hooray!)

But as for the ships always moving a little bit towards something when attacking it, yeah I see that often too, and it can be kind of aggravating.

@BobTheJanitor
It's worse than that I'm afraid. All guard posts (except for the special forces guard post) have radar dampening.
But yea, giving the artillery golem radar dampening might help with this particular situation, but it doesn't help with the "needless approach" of ships in general. And if it was not a radar dampening thing, but rather the behavior of explicit targeting itself, than this issue isn't really solved.
