Summary | 0029160: Small Arms research can be exploited by deliberately not completing the initial equipment collection task
Description | Logging this as a potential balance issue, as it may encourage players to play in a tedious fashion to gain a small advantage By delaying the initial 'Weapons and Armour' quest, the player can control the upgrade deck for the Small Arms research idea. By subsequently proceeding along the Tent-Destruction and housing construction paths, the player can then gain 5x Small Arms inspirations that will remain unspent (ie. unable to research) until they unlock a desired equipment type - at which point the upgrades for that equipment type are guaranteed to be drawn due to being the only ones in the deck. This can be delayed up until (at maximum) the completion of the Water Purification task, as the Food task requires the player to have completed Weapons and Armour before it will permit them to conduct investigations in the fields. This is beneficial to the player because by doing so they can prevent the upgrade pool from being 'polluted' with upgrades for less favoured equipment (particularly the Security Hoodie and MilStyle Armour, which both become effectively obsolete with later equipment) and instead concentrate all their upgrades into one or two equipment categories. In the save attached during a Nickelbot-focused run, this behaviour is exploited to ensure the first 4 small arms upgrades can be focused into fully upgrading Rifle weapons A more likely 'strategy guide' tactic would be to use this exploit to maximise shotgun upgrades or (in a similarly extreme case) to upgrade ultralight armour instead of early game armour.

This is a great point, and if it were during the main game loop I'd be more concerned. As it is, it's only during chapter one, which is a tutorial people are expected to play once. By the time you're starting in chapter two, you already have all those weapons and the upgrades, so it's moot for people who would try to micro more than once. It's a great observation, though. |
