Summary0027724: Engineer selection is completely broken
DescriptionHowdy,

I only play this game every few weeks, so the issue might have occured earlier.

I tried the following with all mods disabled, and quit and restarted the game (because I know SOME stuff can survive even mod de-load).

It is impossible for me to "just select all stuff man" (with M). Engineers will not be selected.
This was ALREADY an issue for me with citadel engineers in the past (just citadel ones! But it's just 4-8/30 or what you usually have so I didn't bother).

But now it affects all engineers.
Ok, I noticed there's an engineer hotkey that is not mapped.
I map it to M.
Nothing changes.
I restart the game.
Now ONLY engineers are selected (mobile M is still assigned!).
I clear engineer M. Mobiles get selected again.

Please check

Assign a different key to select engineers. Having the same key for more than one thing is going to have weird results. I use select all engineers all the time, but I gave it its own key.

Well I am playing a lazy "simply select all stuff on the map" style because I very rarely load my ships.
That definitely broke completely now.

The menu explicitly stating that - even if you changed something and I would have to adapt - I could still be fine by just setting the hotkeys accordingly is confusing at least then.

Either way: A *select all army* hotkey is a standard feature of basically any game.
Something changed or broke, no matter how you twist it

Probably holding down shift (to add to selection) when you press m with both bound to m will work.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I'm not going to use multi-key shenanigans for basic functions.

I can bind it to more reachable stuff than monkey-grip Shift+M like Ctrl+A or something, but that doesn't change the greatly increased work that has to be put in to do something that is basic and was easily achievable before.

Engineers belong to their motherships like every other unit does. No one would leave their engis behind when roaming the map.
I cannot extrapolate how much of the playerbase this affects but one can imagine if games like SC2 have buttons for this, it's not negligible.

I don't see this is an URGENT bug, just a critical one from an UX standpoint.

Ok then either get use to how it is, or just hotkey everything to one key, then it will 100% work like you want it to.

When i say hotkey i mean, assign all of your fleets to the same group number, like 1. Press 1 and everything including engineers will be selected.

Of course, that's how I used to do it before discovering M.

Yet that means if there is ANY change in the fleet (which is rather frequent), I have to group it again, and I hated it for that exact reason.

Like I said, from an UX standpoint it's a really simple fact: "Press a button that select all units" ("that can enter through warp gates" in case of this game... well it wouldn't even matter, since the game logic filters that out anyway).

Games need this. It's bad UX to not have it.
Ctrl + A for Windows explorer is a workaround for stupid users for example. But if you could rebind it, it should work just as well with a single key.

I really hope you don't get this the wrong way, I sincerely appreciate you trying to help.
I'm just 100% on the standpoint that UX-wise, 1) the fact that it worked before and broke/got changed says something [obligatory https://xkcd.com/1172/ ^^] 2) it's just a very neat function to have in general. Because it makes manual binding COMPLETELY obsolete while also only using one key.

@N8c I thought of that very xkcd while reading this thread.

Engineers no longer being included in 'M' took some adjusting for me too. My new process is to briefly flip to the galaxy map and quickly drag a selection box around all the planet fleets. Doing this selects everything within those fleets including engineers.
