Summary | 0002665: Campaign editor
Description | Basically a tool that lets you do what you do for the tutorials. Set players, pre-place buildings, pre-structered map, scripted unit creation, scripted waves, and the rest. Now of course, I would not expect this for a LONG time, if ever. But maybe just keep this idea around just in case you do feel like it in the distant future.

The tutorial is hardcoded :) |
I know. This idea would be taking the "events" you hard coded into the tutorial and making them more generic. Of course, this is no small task, hence why I do not expect this anytime soon. |
I guess you can just let this idea sit here idle for several major versions until you finally decide for or against it. |
It's been discussed, but it's super unlikely. |
Yea; we've been batting around the idea of a "scenario editor" for a while. It would be an anchor feature of an expansion. Hadn't really occurred to us to have tutorial-esque scripted waves available in that editor, etc, but that would be something to explore there. |
I feel like we're moving further and further away from that direction, though. We'll see, of course. But it seems like one of those features that is always "maybe next year" indefinitely. ;) |
Understood. I just thought this idea should be archived in the bug-tracker at some point. (Of course you do realize that if you don't do it, eventually we, the community, will figure out some nifty way to do it ourselves) Well, I'll leave this alone for now. This idea can now rot idly until much, much later. |
Well, the format for savegames isn't really that complex, for anyone writing C# stuff. If there were someone really interested in making a third-party editor, I'd be happy to talk with them about the specifics of the data format so that they could do something like that. It wouldn't include scripted events or things of the nature of the tutorial, but you could at least set up specific scenarios (eg, custom galaxy designs with custom situations that players would have to win) in the style of map editors for various other RTS games. |
Yea, that would be pretty straightforward for someone willing to spend the time on it. The game itself would play just like normal, but the actual gamestate would be up for grabs. |
Yep. Of course, building a visual interface to make such a map editor would be quite the task. Fortunately they'd be able to pull in the actual images and such from in-game, since they're just files on the disk, but it still would be no picnic. |
