Summary | 0026552: HA, Challenger, and Expert description text
Description | RE: The discussion on the Arcen community discord about the description text for Humanity Ascendant, Challenger and Expert (the discussion is about here: https://discord.com/channels/240637654717300736/242012213580136448/947849907899883560) Primarily the issue is a question of whether the description texts for HA, Challenger, and Expert in the game start menu are appropriately worded. Specifically, whether they give players the wrong idea about Expert's role in the ecosystem, and imply that Expert is the intended method of play while HA is more akin to a tutorial mode. This is very likely a question of taste, of course, but arguably the language could be more neutral. I have attached a .docx file with visible version changes for a copyediting review pass I did, aiming to make the descriptions more neutral, without sacrificing accuracy or conciseness. (Full disclosure: I'm an editor in my day job). Please do not feel as though I am demanding that my changes (or any changes, for that matter) are implemented. These are just suggestions. In case you do feel they're appropriate, I explicitly waive all legal rights to the text in the attached file, the contents of which may be used by Arcen Games in any manner they see fit, etc.

Thanks! * Further reworked the descriptions of Humanity Ascendant and Expert mode in the lobby, mostly pulling directly from what Dudeman wrote. ** HA: *** Humanity Ascendant (HA) is the default campaign type for AI War 2. HA campaigns are dynamic, aggressive, and reward the seizure of territory with powerful features even if they are difficult to defend. Your primary challenge will be assembling a force that can crack the AI Homeworld(s) without allowing the AI to scale beyond your means to defend against. Other than your home command station, there are few strategic locations that are critical to defend, making HA campaigns more of a cat-and-mouse war. *** Any game features, factions, or quickstarts will work in any mode. ** Expert: *** Expert mode is an alternate, more difficult, official campaign type for AI War 2. Expert campaigns are tense and complex, where you must choose your strategic targets very carefully and have many fronts that you must defend. *** If you wish to report the 'bug' of having beaten the difficulty-10 AI, using Expert mode (or higher) is required. HA mode has some mechanics that can be abused in service of that specific goal, and that's a feature not a bug. *** Details: various galaxy options that make the game cheesy-easy are locked off, and you must fight a minimum of two AIs. A lot of the complexity of the game is lost when you only have one AI, because you don't get that ramp-up in challenge after defeating the first one, and have to figure out how to still deal with the second one. *** In addition to everything that Challenger mode adds, this mode forces on mechanics that make beachheading harder to cheese. You also get only one Battelstation at the start, rather than two. There are some other features that are only forced on for Expert, but you can enable most of those features in lower modes as well. *** Fuel is not required until Logistician, because that fundamentally changes the game flow in ways that not everyone is going to appreciate. However, fuel can be enabled as an option in any mode. This is in the larger context of also having added logistician mode; see the wiki. |
