Citadels are effectively a quasi-planetary fleet where the control piece is the citadel or battlestation instead of a command station. Direct upgrading them upgrades all their attached supports and defensive structures. Planetary fleets also have the same behavior of direct upgrading the command station will also level that system's engineers up. Combat Factories are *not* in that category. Upgrading them is only that unit plus its drones much like other fleet command units plus the fact you can actually assign regular fleet assets into a combat factory fleet. Consequently direct upgrades for stuff like Combat Factories are also significantly cheaper because it only is for itself. Basically science cost of getting a Combat Factory to Mk4 is 600 and a Citadel to Mk4 is 4500 or 6000 depending on HA or Expert mode. It is a *massive* difference. Meanwhile giving cloaking to all your engineers no matter where they are is only 2500 in HA or 4000 in Expert. The tech is global and there for a reason. Same reasoning behind how the sentry frigates of Combat Factories are linked to station keeping tech. |
