Summary0025306: Minelayer Frigates and their behavior in pursuit mode
DescriptionAll of the Minelayer Frigates be it

the Heavy with 3360 range
the Light with 9600 range AND a defensive bonus if they are more than 4400 range from a target
and the "Normal" ones with 4000 range

will always go into meele range, to drop their mines directly onto their target.

Maybe this behaviour is intended, but given the different range of their weapons and especially in case of the light variant with it's defensive bonus this behaviour feels strange and kinda wrong

In my opinion it would be more appropriate when they like all other ships, would try to stay at their maximum weapon range to the target and "lure" it into their dropped mines.

I find this behavior to be inherently amusing. Perhaps the light variant could have a different behavior to keep it at a distance from targets: the "mines" are temporary gravitational units that slow down nearby enemies. The behavior for the other variants should be fine.

Originally, these frigates acted like other frigates but feedback showed this was very underwhelming. The mines required too much micro to work reliably and pursuit mode would actively fight against the player to have them place mines

The frigates were given a silent melee weapon so they would in fact get in range to drop their mines consistently

The Light minelayer probably doesn't need this functionality, but I will keep it for the other two

Wasn't aware the frigates behaved differently originally.
Well and i don't know what the conditions for the frigates are to drop their mines.

But just a though (which might be total nonsense, or simply not be easily to code (i have no idea about programming))

Couldn't the frigate just check if there is a hostile unit in a certain radius around them and then drop mines in a fixed interval similar to how the drones of the trailblazer cruiser do it(and least it feels like they do it in a fixed interval)?

Like i said that might be total rubbish, in that case just ignore what i wrote.

minelayers have a hidden drone gun that drops mines. These "minelayer guns" only activate in the presence of a valid enemy target

The trailblazers act precisely the same way as minelayer frigates, its the same code

*removed melee pursuit from Light Minelayers. This variant does need to have default kiting behavior unlike the other 2, which performed poorly until given melee

In 3.305 ,which should have fixed their behavior according to the patchnotes, the Light Minelayer Frigates still seem to go into meele range.
I have some of them in the Assault Strike Behemoth Fleet (Keybind 1) on Parkwater.

It should be noted that the AMU and Kaizers Marauder mod are aktive for this save

Gotta correct myself, they're in the Distraction Strike Annoyer Fleet (Keybind 3).
